Gunadhya's Brhatkatha in Prakrit is said to be the oldest work in the history of Indian literature. Katha-Saritsagara is the Sanskrit shloka rendition of Gunadhya's Brhatkatha. It is seen by many Sanskritists as one of the oldest works of Sanskrit narrative literature.
Its author Somadeva Bhatta has stated that the Katha Saritsagara retains fidelity to Gunadhya's Prakrit work. However, the treatment, presentation and rhetorical skills of Somadeva Bhatta lend the Kathasaritsagara a rare distinction.
Katha Saritsagara literally means an ocean of the rivers of various kathas. These stories present the realities of life in all their shades. Reflecting the nine rasas, they mirror the life and culture of Ancient India.
Katha-Saritsagara comprises of 21388 shlokas in Sanskrit divided into 124 tarangas and 18 lambakas. It is a seminal work, and the entire tradition of Indian writing is indebted to it.
This edition is an abridged Hindi translation which has been carried out by a stalwart writer. It is available for sale at our bookstore and through mail order.
