अंग्रेजी का एक शब्द है असाइनमेंट, इसने मुझे बहुत परेशान कर रखा है। शब्दकोशों में जो अर्थ दिया गया है, अनेक बार वह संदर्भ के साथ मेल नहीं खाता। वैज्ञानिक एवं तकनीकी शब्दावली में समनुदेशन  दिया गया है, जो निश्चय ही प्रचलित स्वरूप नहीं है और आम आदमी के लिए नहीं है। मेरा मत है कि कार्य-आवंटन अधिक उपयुक्त रहेगा। कृपया सुझाव दें।

विनोद जी,

संदर्भ के बिना सटीक पर्याय बता पाना संभव नहीं है। 

भारत सरकार की वैज्ञानिक तथा तकनीकी शब्दावली में इसके लिए 'नियतन' शब्द का भी प्रयोग हुआ है। यह 'समनुदेशन' से आसान है, लेकिन हिंदी मे पारिभाषिक शब्दों की सबसे बड़ी समस्या यह है कि ये प्रचलित नहीं हो पाते। मैं हिदी में भी 'असाइनमेंट' लिखता हूँ। इसकी सबसे बड़ी वजह यह है कि मैं जिन संस्थाओं और कंपनियों के लिए अनुवाद करता हूँ वहाँ अधिकतर लोग 'समनुदेशन' और 'नियतन' को तो छोड़ दीजिए 'आवंटन' का भी अर्थ नहीं जानते हैं।

Assignment के लिए सामान्य अर्थों में कार्य-आवंटन/ सुपुर्द काम/ नियत कार्य ठीक है। बीमा या अन्य ऐसे संदर्भों में "स्वामित्व हस्तांतरण" या "अधिकार हस्तांतरण" का प्रयोग हो सकता है। भारतीय जीवन बीमा निगम इसके लिए समनुदेशन का ही प्रयोग करता है। एक सामान्य बीमाधारक को जित्ता असाइनमेंट समझ आएगा उत्ता ही समनुदेशन भी आ जाएगा।

मुझे एक ज़िम्मेदारी मिली है। मुझे एक काम मिला है। यही ठीक अनुवाद होगा। अगर अँग्रेज़ी के हर शब्द के लिए हिन्दी में एक शब्द तय कर दिया जाएगा, तो वह हिन्दी नहीं, हिन्दी में अँग्रेज़ी भाषा हो जाएगी। अनुवाद अर्थ का होता है। शब्दों का नहीं। हमारे ज़्यादातर अनुवादक इस बात को समझना क्यों नहीं चाहते?

जो अंगरेजी जानते हैं वे यह मान के चलते हैं कि अंगरेजी के जिन शब्दों से वे सुपरिचित होते हैं और जिनका वे हिन्दी में बेझिझक प्रयोग करते हैं वे दूसरों को भी समान रूप से समझ में आने वाले होते हैं। किंतु ऐसा वास्तव में होता नहीं है। बहुत से हिन्दीभाषियों एवं अन्य देशजभाषाभाषियों के लिए वे समझ के परे भी होते हैं। किंतु दुर्भाग्य है कि हम भारतीय उन लोगों की असुविधा की परवाह नहीं करते हैं।

अनुवादकों के लिए यह अच्छा और औदार्यपूर्ण होगा कि वे अंगरेजी के शब्दों के साथ-साथ ही हिन्दी के तुल्य शब्द भी प्रयोग में लें। यह कहना कि हिन्दी के शब्द कठिन होते हैं उचित नहीं है। वे कठिन इसलिए लगते हैं कि उन शब्दों को अपनी शब्द-संपदा में हमने शामिल करने की कोशिश ही नहीं की होती है। वे कठिन हैं कहकर आरम्भ से ही उनसे बचते हैं। अंगरेजी के शब्द भी कठिन लगते हैं आरंभ में, लेकिन उन्हें सीखने का प्रयास हर कोई अवश्य करता है। 

ऊपर मैंने शब्द औदार्य का प्रयोग किया है। बहुत से लोग इसके अर्थ न समझें तो आश्चर्य नहीं होगा। मैंने इस शब्द को कहीं कभी पढ़ा-सुना है या नहीं मुझे याद नहीं है । किन्तु अपने सीमित संस्कृत ज्ञान के आधार पर इसकी तथा इसके समान अन्य शब्दों की  व्युत्पत्ति एवं अर्थ समझने में कोई कठिनाई नहीं होती हैं। (उदार -> औदार्य, सुन्दर -> सौन्दर्य, कठिन -> काठिन्य, दृढ -> दार्ढ्य, दीर्घ -> दैर्घ्य, मधुर -> माधुर्य, इत्यादि।)

वैज्ञानिक और तकनीकी शब्दावली से आपका क्या आशय है। मैंने इस नाम की कोई शब्दावली नहीं देखी है। कृपया इसके प्रकाशक का नाम बताएँ या अगर आपका आशय वैज्ञानिक तथा तकनीकी शब्दावली आयोग द्वारा प्रकाशित किसी शब्दावली या शब्दकोश से है तो उसका नाम बताएँ जिसमें इसके लिए एकमात्र समनुदेशन शब्द दिया गया है जिससे आप बहुत परेशान हैं।

अलबत्ता, मैंने भारत सरकार के वैज्ञानिक तथा तकनीकी शब्दावली आयोग द्वारा प्रकाशित बृहत पारिभाषिक शब्द संग्रह (मानविकी और सामाजिक विज्ञान) में इन दोनों शब्दों के अर्थ देखे तो मुझे उसमें असाइन और असाइनमेंट शब्दों के कई अर्थ मिले।मैंने बहुत से अंग्रेज़ी-हिंदी शब्दकोशों में भी इनके अर्थ तलाशने की कोशिश की तो उनमें भी अक्सर मुझे एक से अधिक अर्थ मिले। इनमें संदर्भ के अनुसार असाइन या असाइनमेंट शब्द के अर्थ कुछ इस प्रकार दिए गए हैं -
