जीव जीवस्य भोजनम (jiiv jiivasya bhojanam)

I am wondering if any of you can think of an English equivalent to the phrase 'जीव जीवस्य भोजनम'...I know it means that one creature is another creature's sustenance, but there must be some catchier way to put it...or have I missed the meaning to some degree?

The correct Sanskrit sentence is:

जीवो जीवस्य भोजनम् ।

After removal of sandhi, it is:

जीवः जीवस्य भोजनम् ।

Rachel - what is the context?

Is the conversation about veg/non-veg diet... or is it more about social dynamics - about how in order to maintain its relevance, one person has to dominate the other? I suspect it's the former... but thought I'll check.

Well, it's more about the animal world...the little girl says that the fact that geckos eat mosquitoes is one more reason they're gross, and the father answers with this saying:-)

Well, the food chain thing is kind of what I was thinking, too...although someone mentioned "the circle of life" as well...probably that's more poetic but it hadn't yet occurred to me!

I think I like the 'food chain' version better than 'cycle of life'. Captures the sentiment of the original a little better, IMHO.
