Hi!

I would like to buy a comprehensive book about hindi grammar. Could you propose something? Omkar N Koul's "Modern Hindi Grammar" seems to examine thoroughly all aspects of hindi grammar. But maybe there are better ones?

The best one I found is 'Intro to Hindi Grammar' by Usha Jain of UC
Berkeley. There is also an 'Advanced Hindi Grammar' for those special
grammar rules beyond the basics. Rules are explained in simple
English, and exercises and examples are given in Hindi.
Both are available from ord...@parrotsbooks.com for $40.00 each.

I also like "Outline of Hindi Grammar" by R.S,.McGregor from Oxford University Press.  The same guy who did the Oxford Hindi-English dictonary. You can probably get it cheap if it is used as it is sold in college bookstores and then sold back by students.  I would check on Ebay for example.

Yes, it seems, that McGregor's one is also good (I saw only some pages in Amazon, incl. list of content).
I have Hindi-English dictionary of McGregor, which is really good :)

I like McGregor, too...it has nice exercises.  Of course there is Rupert Snell's Teach Yourself Hindi, which is good for starting out, though I don't really like the exercises.  And someone also mentioned Usha Jain's book...once you get to intermediate Jain has a great reader.

I would try and look at several before buying...it all depends on how your brain works.  I like Michael Shapiro's Primer of Modern Standard Hindi:
http://www.amazon.com/Primer-Modern-Standard-Michael-Shapiro/dp/8120805089/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1263053623&sr=8-1

It is very thorough and Prof. Shapiro is a linguist, so when it comes to explaining the grammar I think it is better than any of the other books I've seen.  It is also really nicely organized.  The only downside is that while it does have exercises, it does not have answers to them.
