अनायास (anaayaas)

I have just a bit more:
1. मुन्ना ने अनायास ही पूछ लिया। (munna ne anaayaas hii puuchh liyaa)
My dictionary says that अनायास (anaayaas) means "involuntarily, without effort, suddenly", but none of those really work given the context. Munna is responding to Sushma saying there were no geckos in the room, he asks "Is it really true that there are no geckos in this room?"...is there some other translation of अनायास (anaayaas) that I haven't listed?
2. Does "नहीं भी" (nahii.N bhii) have any particular meaning?
I got it from the sentence पर यदि इस कमरे में छिपकलियाँ नहीं भी हैं तो उससे उनकी जीत अथवा उनके इस उल्लास का क्या संबंध?
(par yadi is kamre me.n chhipkaliyaa.N nahii.N bhii hai.n to us se un kii jiit athavaa un ke is ullaas kaa kyaa sa.nba.ndh?)
I am translating that as "But if there weren't even any geckos in this room then what was the relationship between their success and this delight of theirs?"...does that seem right?
3. क्या तुम्हें आश्चर्य नहीं होगा कि तुम्हारे कमरे में एक भी छिपकली क्यों नहीं है? (kyaa tumhe.n aashcharya nahii.N hogaa ki tumhaare kamre me.n ek bhii chhipkalii kyo.n nahii.N hai?)
I am not sure how the क्यों (kyo.N) is working here...I translated this sentence as "Won't you be astonished to find that there isn't even one gecko in this room?"...but that isn't taking into account the क्यों (kyo.N), really. What do you all think?

It sounds redundant but I have seen/heard this usage often. Something
like this:
"Won't you be surprised to find why there is not a single gecko in
this room."

Perhaps "spontaneously" or "reflexively" is a better fit? Maybe even
'instinctively'. I think the context is that Munna's response to
Sushma's assertion is instant and made without a lot of deliberation,
as a sort of a knee-jerk reaction like "sachchii?" (Girl - there are
no geckos here. Boy - really?)

How about: "Won't you wonder why there isn't even one gecko in your
room?"
