I am (still, I admit) reading Narendra Kohli's हम साब का घर and have run into a couple of words I would appreciate some help with:
1. तल्लीनता (talliintaa)
I think it must mean concentration or being in your own world or something like that based on context. These two kids are playing and not noticing what is going on around them until their तल्लीनता is broken.
2. तार-वार (taar-vaar)
I can't find anything in my dictionary that seems to fit exactly, but am guessing that in this case it means "strike"...here is the sentence it comes from:
कहीं बिजली की कोई तार-वार तो नहीं जल गई?
(kahii.N bijalii kii koI taar-vaar to nahii.N jal ga'I?)

yes, तल्लीनता can represent concerntration or involvement.
तार means wire or cable (some electrical wire has been burnt or
short-circuited). वार is simply a colloquial extension here as in
चाय-वाय, पानी-वानी, ...

be to use `to feel irritated' or simply `to be displeased'. You may use
this verb to express your `immediate' reaction to somebody's behaviour or

यह विशेषण (adjective) शब्द है | संस्कृत के नियमों के अनुसार इससे संज्ञा
(noun) शब्द बनता है `ता' जोड़कर, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे अंग्रेजी मैं `ness' से
होता है | `तल्लीनता' माने `state of being completely aborbed' - `abstract'
noun. संस्कृत में ऐसे अनेकों शब्द मिल जाएंगे, जैसे गंभीर (serious) ->
गंभीरता (seriousness), सुंदर -> सुंदरता (beauty), कुशल -> कुशलता (state of
well being), निपुण (well versed)-> निपुणता, आदि ।
2. `तार-वार' = तार (wire) या उस जैसी कोई चीज | यहां `वार' का अपने आप में
कोई माने नहीं | हिंदी में इस प्रकार के शब्दों का चलन आम बात है, जैसे
`मकान-वकान कुछ है', `दोस्त-वोस्त मिले', `तारीख-वारीख कुछ मालूम नहीं', `घर
में पानी-वानी भी नहीं' | ऐसे सभी `paired' शब्दों में पहला ही सार्थक
(meaningful) रहता है, दूसरा केवल जोर डालने (to emphasize) के लिए इस्तेमाल
होता है | ऐसे शब्द एक हद तक कुछ व्यापक अर्थ रखते हैं | Here `वार' does not
mean `strike'. Sanskrit term वार definitely has that meaning, but here वार
is not that Sanskrit term.

मैं संस्कृत का ज्ञाता तो नहीं हूं, किंतु उसमें रुचि लेता हूं और उसे सीखने
का प्रयास करता हूं । अतः संक्षेप में कुछ कह सकता हूं । ‘लीन’ संज्ञाशब्द
संस्कृत के ‘ली’ धातु से बना है, जिसका अर्थ है चिपकना, घुलना, मिलना, समा
जाना, इत्यादि । इसी से ‘लय’ शब्द भी प्राप्त होता है । उपसर्गों के प्रयोग
से ‘लीन’ से अन्य शब्द बनते हैं, जैसे ‘विलीन’, ‘निलीन’, ‘प्रलीन’, ‘संलीन’ ।
बनने को तो ‘अतिलीन’, ‘परिलीन’, ‘सुलीन’, आदि भी बन सकते हैं, परंतु वे शायद
प्रयोग में नहीं आते हैं । विभिन्न प्रत्ययों के योग से ‘लीन’ से ही ‘लीनता’,
‘लीनत्व’ और ‘लैन्य’ शब्द सिद्धांततः बन सकते हैं, जो समानार्थी हैं और ‘लीन’
होने के संज्ञा भाव को व्यक्त करते हैं, जैसे विचारों में खो जाना, उनमें
एकाग्रचित्त हो जाना । मैं कह नहीं सकता कि इनमें से कौन से व्यवहार में
इस्तेमाल होते हैं । इस प्रकार के कई शब्द संस्कृत भाषा में देखने को मिलते
हैं, यथा ‘सुन्दर’ से ‘सुन्दरता’, ‘सुन्दरत्व’, एवं ‘सौन्दर्य’ - अर्थ समान ।
इसी प्रकार ‘दीन’ से ‘दीनता’, ‘दीनत्व’, एवं ‘दैन्य’ । तत्संबंधित नियमों की
चर्चा करने में मैं अभी असमर्थ हूं ।
‘तत्लीन’ फारसी में भी है या नहीं मुझे नहीं मालूम, किंतु संस्कृत में तो है
ही । इसका उद्गम ‘लीन’ से है । यह एक सामासिक शब्द हैः तस्मिन् लीनः यः सः
(तत्+लीनः -> तद्+लीनः ->) तल्लीनः, सा तल्लीना, तं तल्लीनम् (क्रमशः तीनों
लिंगों में) । इसी ‘तल्लीन’ शब्द से ‘तल्लीनता’ बना है जो किसी चीज/विचार में
खो जाना है (तस्मिन् = उसमें, लीनः = मिला हुआ, घुला हुआ) । ज्ञातत्व है कि
ऐसे स्थलों पर ‘संधि’ नियमों के अनुसार ‘त्/द्’ के आगे ‘ल’ होने पर ‘त्/द्’
के स्थान पर ‘ल्’ हो जाता है ।
प्रसंग से हटकर कुछ और । संस्कृत प्रमुखतया ‘root-based language’ है,
अर्थात् इसमें शब्दों की रचना क्रियाधातुओं (verb roots) से की जाती है ।
शब्दों की रचना के व्यापक तथा उच्च कोटि के नियम हैं, जो संस्कृत को
शब्द-सामर्थ्य में किसी भी अन्य भाषा से आगे रखते हैं । ग्रीक एवं लैटिन में
भी यह खूबी है, किंतु संस्कृत के स्तर की नहीं ऐसा मेरा मत है । आधुनिक
भाषाओं में यह सामर्थ्य बहुत कम है । संस्कृत का व्याकरण रोचक तथा ‘लगभग’
पूर्णतः वैज्ञानिक है । यही कारण रहा है कि वैज्ञानिक पृष्ठभूमि वाले मुझमें
इसके प्रति रुचि रही है । आवश्यकतानुसार नितांत नये शब्दों का गढ़ना अथवा ऐसे
नये शब्दों के अर्थ खोज निकालना संस्कृत जानने वाले के लिए संभव है । मैं भी
इसका कुछ लाभ यदा-कदा उठा लेता हूं ।

"तार-वार" जैसे शब्दयुग्मों के विषय पर योगेंद्रजी ने जो लिखा है उसके
आगे शायद ही किसी और के कुछ कहने की गुंजाइश रह जाती है| मगर फिर भी एकाध
छोटी-सी बात --
(१) इस प्रकार के शब्दयुग्म न केवल हिंदी में सुनाई पड़ते हैं बल्कि
अंग्रेजी और बहुत-सी अन्य भाषाओं में भी सुने जा सकते हैं. E.g., super-
duper, knick-knack, flim-flam
(२) भाषाशास्त्र (Linguistics) में इस प्रकार से शब्दयुग्म बनाने को
"reduplication" कहते हैं|

There occurs तार-वार also in Premchand's "Karmabhoomi". What could be its meaning there?. Here it is:
"हालांकि लालाजी अब उसे घर के धंधो में लगाना चाहते थे-वह तार-वार पढ़ लेता था और इससे अधिक योग्यता की उनकी समझ में जरूरत न थी-पर अमरकान्त उस पथिक की भांति, जिसने दिन विश्राम में काट दिया हो, अब अपने स्थान पर पहुंचने के लिए दूने वेग से कदम बढ़ाए चला जाता था।"
