My name is Riho and I live in Estonia. I study at Tallinn University Asian culture (especially Indian culture). In Estonia we don't have currently any hindi teacher, so I studied a bit hindi language via book "Teach Yourself Hindi". (At school we study sanskrit, but not hindi language).
I hope that my questions (about different aspects of hindi language), which I will ask sometimes in this list, will not overburden you, because you will surely find these too basic. But just therefore I joined this list - because you're qualified to answer me! :)
- My first question here: sometimes it seems to me, that in hindi several words does not change the ending in singular oblique case, those ending with long आ. Is it because of feminine gender in this cases? Can there be still another reasons, why several words ending with आ will not change the ending in oblique singular? I will give just an example. Is it right to say: कन्या में (in the girls/maidens)?
- Still another question: sometimes there occurs a word from भाई (brother) in such a form: भाइयो. For instance there is in hindi New Testament such (only a sample) sentence: हे भाइयो, तुम जानते हो, की हमारा तुम्हारे पास आना व्यर्थ न हुआ. Does this भाइयो have a certain vocative sense, something like in sanskrit भो from a word भागवत? Can you describe its grammatical structure, please?

- You are exactly right. Feminine words ending with "आ " does not oblique. for eg:
- भाइयो is indeed used here in vocative sense. The difference between oblique plural "भाइयों" and vocative is the absence of nasalization in the vocative case. Other eg: "बहनो" "लड़को"

Your answer was very helpful for me. If I remember right, the textbook "Teach Yourself Hindi" didn't explain the vocative in details.

In the Hindi song छुन-छुन करती आई चिड़िया , there is the phrase “कौआ रोटी लाएगा लाके तुझे खिलाएगा”. What is the translation of लाके in the sentence ? With limited sources at hand, the only word that I can find approaching any meaning is लाक, signifying trough or sluice. But how does it fit? The subject can’t be a plural because the verb is future 3rd person singular: “will feed/nourish thee,” linking it thus with कौआ–unless लाके be a name or singular noun so pronounced…

का शब्द, lock-up, है, जिसे हिंदी समाचार माध्यम इस्तेमाल करने लगे हैं और
जिसके माने हैं `हवालात' या `कारावास' |
मौजूदा प्रसंग में `लाके' का अर्थ है `ला कर' = `ला कर के' = `ले आकर' =
`(after) having brought' | ऐसे क्रियापदों का हिंदी में प्रयोग आम बात है,
जैसे `पढ़के' = `पढ़ के' = `पढ़ कर'; लिखके, देखके, सुनके, आदि |
`पढ़के' होना चाहिए अथवा `पढ़ के' इसे मैं ठीक से नहीं कह सकता, क्योंकि मैंने
दोनों प्रयोग देखे हैं | मैं व्यक्तिगत तैर पर `पढ़ कर' का प्रयोग पसंद करता

जॉन टी. प्लैट्स की "अ डिक्शनरी ऑफ़ उर्दू, क्लासिकल हिंदी एंड इंग्लिश"
के अनुसार "लाक" का अर्थ लाख (संख्या नहीं, पदार्थ) होता है. "लाक" इस
शब्द का मूल फ़ारसी रूप है और उस रूप में अपने यहाँ भी प्रयुक्त है.
अलबत्ता मैंने ख़ुद इस पदार्थ को हिंदी में हमेशा लाख ही लिखा देखा है,
लाक नहीं.
