This is a set of books which had been unavailable to the public for a
very long time. We have been able to trace these books with great
difficulty.

Babu Devakinandan Khatri (1861 - 1913) was Hindi’s pioneering novelist
and a superstar in his own right. In today’s terms, his stature and
fame were akin to JK Rowling’s. Lakhs of people learnt Hindi in order
to read his masterpieces of mystery and suspense. His Chandrakanta,
Chandrakanta Santati and Bhutanath built an avid readership in Hindi,
way back in the last decades of the 19th century.

He was the first author of mystery novels in Hindi. He wrote
Chandrakanta, Chandrakanta Santati, Kajar ki Kothari, Narendra-Mohini,
Kusum Kumari, Birendrabir, Gupt Godana, Katora Bhar Khoon and
Bhutanath. Bhutanath was incomplete and completed by his son, Durga
Prasad Khatri, who wrote the concluding volumes of Bhutanath saga as
Rohataas Math. In turn, Durgaprasad Khatri’s grandson Vivek Khatri
wrote the final segment of the saga - Hiiron Ki Ghaati. It is
probably the only instance in the world where four generations of a
family co-wrote one epic novel. But then, Chandrakanta is a very
special novel, unmatched by any other piece of literature anywhere in
the world.

Khatri was born in Samastipur, Bihar. After his early education he
moved to Tekari Estate in Gaya and became an employee of the King of
Varanasi. He started a printing press called "Lahari" and started a
Hindi monthly, "Sudarshan", in 1898.

Khatri made a strong contribution to the learning of the Hindi
language by the people of the times. People were so mesmerised by his
works like Chandrakanta, Chandrakanta Santiti and Bhutanath that they
would learn Hindi just to be able to read his writings. Khatri did not
write any work at one go and then publish it. He used to write bayaans
- chapters - on the run from the British and these were published and
distributed widely. People would enthusiastically await the new
bayaans and congregate around those who could read Hindi to hear the
latest exploits in the continuing saga.

An aiyaar {male} or aiyaaraa {female} is a spy, in the service of a
king, who specializes in disguise. A tilisma is a kind of maze
containing many secret locations, passages and prisons. Words like
these were contributed to the Hindi language by the popular novels of
Khatri, the first author of mystery novels in Hindi.

Very uniquely, Devakinandan Khatri’s son Durgaprasad Khatri turned out
to be an equally skilled writer. He not only finished Bhutanath, he
also penned several other classics of mystery, suspense. He also added
the element of science-fiction in his own writings. And all this, in
the early decades of the 20th century, when India was a backward
colonially repressed nation!
