What does revolution look like? Does it have to be loud or violent to
create an impact? This lecture will draw inspiration from lesser known
figures and movements, including Premiji, Bombay's first publisher, to
demonstrate how the written word and self-practice can be crucial tools
towards challenging complacency and societal norms.

....................................................................

Premiji: Pandit Nathuramji Premi, a giant amongst Indian scholars.

India's first publisher of Hindi literature, the first man to publish
Digambara Jain scriptures, the first one to translate and publish in
Hindi Bengali giants like Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay, Rabindranath
Tagore and Bankimchandra. Premiji was the first publisher of Munshi
Premchand's classic novel "Godan".

Premiji published critically edited Jain scriptures under the
"Manikchandra Jain Granthamala" and Hindi literature under
"Hindi Granth Ratnakar Karyalay" and important books on
humanitarian subjects under the "Hemachandra Modi Pustakmala".

Premiji was an auto-didact and learnt several languages including
Hindi, Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhramsha, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi
and Urdu. He published India's first Urdu-Hindi dictionary as well.

The first book Premiji published was "Svadhinta" a Hindi translation of
Abraham Lincoln's "Liberty". The book was published on 23 September
1912. There was no looking back from there.

Under his sterwardship, Hindi Granth Ratnakar Karyalay grew into
India's largest Hindi publishing house and published stalwarts such as
Pandit Hajariprasad Dvivedi, Jainendra Kumar, Sharatchandra
Chattopadhyay, Munshi Premchand, Dr. Motichandra, and many others.

Today, the publishing house Premiji started is known as Hindi Granth
Karyalay and specialises in publishing and distributing literature
in Hindi, Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhramsha and Urdu. It is run by
Premiji's grandson Mr Yashodhar Modi with his son, the present writer.

Yours,
Manish Modi
