Instead of purchasing ice cream cones, we made them on our own! In the process, my son D learns about turning 2D shapes (semi-circle) into 3D objects (cone) We also added prices to the ice cream so he gets to practise his addition and subtraction. My younger girl revised basic numeracy eg 1, 2, 3 scoops!
This ice cream pretend play shop is a child-led activity and the kids take pride in their work because they created it themselves. It took us about 30 minutes to get everything set up, but more importantly, it was good bonding between me and the kids. I strongly urge you to try this low preparation ice cream pretend play with your children!
If you are keen to engage your children in more ice cream related activities: do check out the activities by Happy Tot Shelf and The Simple Parent. If you have more time and would like to print out beautiful printables and labels, I love the ones from Little Lifelong Learners.
Pretend Play is extremely beneficial for young children, and is an essential part of their early years. To learn more about how play can benefit your children, join the free Positive Parenting Learning Series here!
What is possible when we explore how we feel and think about ourselves? What might the world be like if we introduced ourselves to others, not through the lens of the roles we play but rather who we are at our core? What might we create together if we intentionally navigated our lives using the lens of who we truly are? Come and play with us and leave introducing yourself to the world in a new, empowered way.
The importance of being able to think critically and solve problems is strongly valued in both education and employment settings. Discover what it means to think critically and use critical thinking skills to identify opportunities and create value in the world. Take the initiative to actively participate in mapping your future and building self-reliance. In this session, we will practice critical thinking and explore the value of problem-solving, taking initiative, and being self-reliant. Come play with us as we journey into our future and begin building an action plan to make what is possibilities a reality.
Communicating effectively, collaborating with others, initiating, and cultivating powerful partnerships can be essential tools for a human being to navigate life successfully. Discovering how to communicate effectively, what we value in collaborating with others, and how to create spaces where people feel seen and valued is what we play with in this session. Each of these skill sets requires us to get comfortable with being uncomfortable and in doing so, create a valuable impact on the world around us. Come play with us to discover what is possible for you and the powerful partnerships you can build.
Set up an adorable DONUT SHOP dramatic play center for young children that incorporates sorting, counting, reading, and writing activities. Use these printables to organize and inspire learning through dramatic play.
Shallow tubs help display the cute plush donuts (donuts found here), and boxes donated by the local bakery add a touch of realism to the center. A cheery sign up above the display is an easy way to put in even more literary elements. We also love this fun and colorful donut shop backdrop (backdrop found here).
Looking for some more sweet inspiration for the dramatic play center? Check out the Cookie Shop dramatic play here! Or try a frosty sweet treat at the Frosty Queen Ice Cream dramatic play center. Need a more hearty breakfast? Pancakes and waffles make a fun dramatic play area as well!

Those tongs and slippery spaghetti noodles definitely got the fine motor skills working too! in addition too imaginative play she was doing with this activity, one of the coolest things to my daughter was that she got to use real kitchen tools. The pan, strainer, tongs, and whisk are all utensils that we cook with so that made it extra special to her!
The kids had such a great time with this pretend play activity! I love to bring it out on rainy days because it will keep my kids engaged and busy for a long time. They get so creative and I love how they work together to share the spaghetti.
