ABSTRACT PRINTED AND PAPER PRESENTED AT THE ESDev-2005 International
Conference held at Abbotabad in Pakistan in June 2005
The issues pertaining to Sustainable development through improved
agriculture have been addressed in the past two decades at various
international forums, but how far we have achieved sustainability in
agriculture production and dairying is a serious concern to the
scientists, policy makers and the farmers.
In Himachal Pradesh a hill state of India under the Integrated
Watershed Development Project (IWDP), Intensive Dairy Development
programme (IDDP) and through Agriculture Technology Management
Agency (ATMA) of the National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP)
attempts have been made in the recent past to sustain agricultural
and dairy production, protect environment and enhance income and
employment in the rural areas
In the present study an attempt was made to examine the approaches
used under IWDP, IDDP and ATMA in Himachal Pradesh so to ascertain
the impact in the operational area. Analyzed data from the
respondents of Kangra and Shimla districts revealed that majority of
the farmers were having small and fragmented land holdings under
rain-fed condition. Majority of them practice mixed farming of crop
and dairy husbandry. Majority of the respondents in Shimla district
have introduced diversified cropping and by growing various fruits
and vegetables and their family income has enhanced.
Developmental works particularly related to environmental protection
through soil conservation, water harvesting, agro-forestry etc, have
been carried out under IWDP in Kangra District.
Paper highlights the various components those contributed towards
sustainable development through improvements in the mixed farming
and the perception of the respondents towards these programmes and
approaches have been discussed.
Hello
THIS IS A REALLY INTERESTING TOPIC FOR DISCUSSION. AS A RESEARCHER I
HAVE CARRIED ON AND IS STILL NOW CONDUCTING INTENSE FIELD WORK IN
VILLAGES OF KULLU DISTRICT.
I HAVE GONE THROUGH SOME REPORTS OF ATMA, BUT I THINK THE MAIN
PROBLEM FOR ANALYSING SUSTAINABLE DVELOPMENT IN MY AREA IS LACK OF
GENERAL AWARENESS OF THE PEOPLE..... IN THE MONTH OF JUNE WHEN I WAS
INTERVIEWING PEOPLE REGARDING THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL PERCEPTION.....
THEY ARE'NT AWARE OF IT. WHATEVER CLIMATIC HAZARDS I EXPLAIN TO THEM
WHICH I KNOW IS CREATING A GREAT PROBLEM IN THEIR GROSS AGRICULTURAL
OUTPUT..... THEY SAY THAT WE HAVE TO OBEY/ACT ACCORDING TO NATURE'S
WILL. BUT UNTILL AND UNLESS THEY THEMSELVE CAN SPACIFICALLY
UNTERSTAND AND BRING OUT THE PROBLEMS IN FRONT, ITS QUITE HARD TO
ANALYSE ITS TREND AND WORK OUT A SUSTAINABLE PROGRAMME FOR THEIR
HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT.
ANUPRIYA.
