Dear Jaya
Shall discuss this with friends during the next week and get back to you. It
would be fruitful to meet sometime soon and discuss things in detail.
Rahul.

Dear FriendsHimachal Pradesh has been as much at the receiving end of the current development paradigm as any other state of the country. While it was the mega projects that did the most damage in the past, each small river valley is now being ravaged by small hydroelectric and road building project. There are protests wherever the local people are able to look beyond the issues of good compensation for land and temporary employment as labourers, but these seldom gather enough strength to trouble the decision makers as the people are divided geographically across valleys and across loyalty to various political parties. The Campaign for Sustainable Development of the Himalayas (Him Niti) is organising a series of rallies/meetings in the next week where people from different areas and walks of life would join the local people at ecological hotspots to lend strength to the local movements against the (so-called) developmental projects. Sh. Sunder Lal Bahuguna, PV Rajgopal of Ekta Parishad, Ravinder Ravi of NAPM and Arun Shrivastav and Sh. Gopal Krishan would be joining the protestors in the next week's events. The following is the schedule for the meetings:June 17 Sunder Nagar (Dist. Mandi) Protest against proposed cement plantJune 18 Ram bagh, near Manali(Dist. Kullu) Rally against the proposed Himalayan Ski Village project.People from nearly 70 effected villages shall attend the rally.June 19 Sainj, (Dist. Kullu) People shall gather to witness and take stock of the ecologicaldamage brought about by the Parbati II Hydroelectric projectJune 21 Rekong Peo (Dist. Kinnaur) Conference on mega hydel projects and large reservoirsPeople interested to join the campaign may contact Guman Singh (094182-77220) or Kulbhushan Upmanyu (094184-12853) for details. All are welcome. In solidarityRahul Saxena,
