Delhi University’s Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) has decided to scrap the entrance test it conducts every year for its MBA and PhD programmes, and instead give the Common Admission Test (CAT). The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the faculty called on Monday after the university expressed its inability to conduct the exams.

According to the minutes of a meeting held on August 29, the university had, in a letter dated August 25, expressed its inability to conduct FMS’s entrance test scheduled for December 4 saying it was “severely strained by the burden of the exams conducted, on a national level, by other dpartments”.

The switch to CAT has met with considerable opposition from the faculty. “The decision has been taken at the last minute. Students from all over the country take this exam. Joining the CAT means more expenditure. The test conducted by FMS is very different from CAT and we’re worried this will affect the quality of students,” said Dr J K Mitra, a faculty member.
