SHIMLA: Ashok Thakur, Principal Secretary Tribal Development said that awareness would be generated among the people of tribal areas about the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Forest Rights Recognition) Act, 2006 in the ensuing Gram Sabha Meetings on 6th April, 2008.


Addressing a videoconference held here Saturday to review the preparations for successful conduction of Gram Sabhas on 6th April, 2008, Thakur directed all the officers of district administration in tribal areas to brief the public about the salient features of the Act so that traditional forest rights of forest dwellers could be recognized and justice could be delivered to them.

He said that in the Gram Sabha meeting, Chairman and Secretary of the Forest Rights Committee would be elected and last date for receiving claims would be decided.

He said that the Act would be implemented in tribal areas of district Kinnaur, Lahaul Spiti, Pangi and Bharmour areas of district Chamba during the first phase.

Sharab Negi, Special Secretary Tribal Development also gave necessary directions to the officers for successful implementation of the Act. Resident Commissioner Pangi, Additional Deputy Commissioners Kaza and Pooh, ADM Bharmour and SDM Keylong participated in the video conference and briefed about the preparations regarding implementation of the Act.
