Dear friends,
On sunday (31st Aug 2014), I along with Col Cheema, Praveen Malhotra and Mahesh Garg went to Chappar Chiri in Mohali for birding. We stopped at the stone crusher site to look for the Ruddy-breasted Crake which was earlier spotted by Mr Narbir Kahlon at this place. We could see the White-breasted Waterhen and the Common Moorhen but could not spot the elusive Rudy-breasted Crake. Then to our amazement we saw a pair of Brown Crake strolling near the moor. It is the first record of the bird from within the tricity. It was earlier sighted ahead of Siswan last year. We also saw Indian Silverbills, Scaly-breasted Munias, Red Avadavats, Black Drongos, Common Myna, Bank Myna & Pied Starlings.
Jungle Babblers, Striated Babblers, Common Crows, Rock Pigeons and Black-breasted Weavers were all over the place. We also heard the Black Francolin at some distance. We could also see the White-breasted Kingfisher, Zitting Cisticola, Ashy Prinias, Green Bee-eaters and to our delight we saw a few Blue-tailed Bee-eaters too. Just when we were leaving the place, we were surprised to see a First Wintering Bluethroat which is a winter visitor to this place.
From here, we went near the Fateh Burj monument. Here we saw Ashy-crowned Sparrowlarks running and flying after each other. There were a few Crested Larks, Paddyfield Pipits, Common Hoopoes and Pied Bushchats too at this place. On the electric wires, we spotted Wire-tailed Swallows and Streak-throated Swallows. A little ahead at a pond we sighted 10 Lesser Whistling Ducks, a few Red-wattled lapwings and a lone Indian Pond Heron. I also spotted a few House Sparrows here. At a near by field, we spotted around 50
Comb Ducks and 20 Lesser Whistling Ducks. It seems that these are the displaced birds from Motemazra.
Being enthusiastic photographers, we all had our memory cards full with good number of shots within 3 hours and called it a day. The bird list is given below:
