So I'm just back from Richmond and the off-road duathlon held there today. I've had an epiphany, off-road racing is a COMPLETELY different animal than on-road. You guys that ride off-road and do it well, you have my respect.
Signed up for the sport division thinking it would be about half the distance of the expert division like in years past. Surprise! Not this year. 2 categories, but both doing the same course. So I'm in for double the distance I was planning. Start with an 11K run, at about the 8k point my legs are starting to turn to jello, so it wound up feeling like 25% longer. Then a 26K bike. Turns out I'm in way over my head on a technical level, not so bad on the ups and downs, but all the rocks shook me up. Got stuck halfway over one and went sideways into a ravine, and just happened to land on some kind of branch with thorns on it. Took me 5 minutes to get that thing unsnagged from my singlet. Hoping the dozen scratches on my back will elicit some sympathy at home though. Wound up walking some sections because my legs were absolutelty shot and my confidence was zero. Finished it off with a 3.5K run, which thankfully was all on road and pretty flat. But then there's no food or beer or anything afterwards. Got some Gatorade but that's all, not much there to aid with recovery.
So I got to feel what it's like to be coming in from the bike leg and see people who have already finished the race just lounging around. Think I'll stick to road races.
