LETTER: City Council must consider locals

Published: Friday, August 2, 2013

Dear Editor:
Is this Tuscaloosa, Alabama, or the University Alabama? Who’s responsible for providing student housing? The university or outside developers?
In regard to the plaza on 15th Street being torn down for the development of a 550-bed apartment complex for students, what about the task force formed by Mayor Walt Maddox to study the need for student housing in Tuscaloosa? Greed from outside developers is taking over the city. If they have good intentions, they should be concerned with developing affordable housing for the people displaced by the April 2011 tornadoes and the well-being of all who live in Tuscaloosa.
What’s going to happen to all the apartments when student enrollment drops? What about the revenue lost by forcing businesses out of business? Has the City Council thought of people’s livelihoods? They are always talking about high unemployment, yet they are taking away jobs.
Have our council members ever gotten down to a few dollars and barely had $5.45 left to buy a pizza? Have they ever had to use a laundromat? Had to use their car title for a little change at the money store? Have they ever been down and needed some spirits to have a hallelujah good time? Had computer problems that needed to be fixed locally? Consider the many senior citizens who enjoy eating at an affordable diner.
I pray you have peace with the decisions you have made affecting so many lives. It seems best to give Tuscaloosa to the university and we can live in treehouses.
