The Special Committee meets to discuss school overcrowding solutions on Friday Oct 3. (7:30 am, Board Room at 1025 2nd Ave)

Much is unclear so far, but below is what we're seeing in the agenda for the meeting…   Please share your thoughts and questions on the topic…..

·         On subcommittee's Oct 3 agenda you'll find a Power-point presentation with the Superintendent's recommendations for resolving overcrowding. Note that it includes scenarios for closing the Hillcrest middle school and expanding the size of the lower grades. A scenario also assumes a boundary change - what looks to be the same boundary change proposed last year.  See attached, or go to http://ousd.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=258264&GUID=6CA58B63-C0E9-4E50-B469-442B2B05E21C&Search=&Options

·         Also attached with the Oct 3 agenda is the presentation from the Special Committee's Aug 29th meeting.  That also has a discussion of options for dealing with Hillcrest – they look quite different (e.g., it states that the Board agrees to maintain Hillcrest as a K-8 school.)

We (the Pre-K representatives to the Hillcrest Long Range Planning Committee) will attend the Oct 3 meeting as well as review thinking with the LRPC.  What can we see the Hillcrest pre-K's are thinking about this?

Has there been any movement on when the next meeting is taking place?
It seems they need to start moving quickly given that the application
process begins in a little over a month. Thanks!

Its been very quiet from my side.  I'm ready to send emails to Kerry/Kirsten/Roberta to ask them to communicate the current thoughts.  A friend at another school was suggesting that as well.  LRPC reps - you heard anything?

There is no Special Committee meeting planned at the present. The speculation is that the Special Committee will re-focus on scheduling a meeting when the November 4, 2008 elections have occurred.

In the meantime, the directors of the Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at 1025 2nd Ave in the Board Room. The first item on the Agenda is School Portfolio Management Process and Modified Criteria. The first portion of this topic will be to address underperforming schools. The second portion of this topic will address what to do about most schools in Oakland, including North Oakland. The proposal for North Oakland includes: Redesigning Far West, phasing out Claremont Middle School, and converting some or all North Oakland schools from K-5 to K-8 (Chabot, Peralta, Santa Fe, Kaier, and Sankofa). Hillcrest is already a K-8. More detailed info can be found at www.ousd.k12.ca.us. I think that one of the reasons that the OUSD might want to close down Claremont Middle School is that in a community meeting a few months back, the principal at Claremont Middle School stated that the facility was not in accordance with various codes and would be filing a lawsuit. One or more LRPC members expect to attend the Wednesday meeting. I do not know who from the pre-K LRPC group will be able to attend at this time.

I just received an e-mail from Juwen Lam, Demographer for the OUSD. She just advised that the Special Comittee on Attendance, Admissions and Boundaries will be meeting on Friday, November 7, 2008 at 7:30 a.m. in the Board Room at 1025 2nd Ave. The agenda is to be posted no later than the end of the day on Wednesday, November 5, 2008. Bottomline: I will check at the end of the day on November 5, 2008 to advise regarding whether there will be a meeting on Friday, November 7, 2008 at 7:30 a.m.

I just checked the OUSD website and it appears that the November 7, 2008 7:30 a.m. meeting of the Special Committe on Attendance, Admissions and Boundaries will occur. The proposals are: 1) keep Hillcrest as a K-8, and conduct a lottery of 50% of Hillcrest 5th grade for 6th grade; 2) Phase Hillcrest into K-5 by 2011, accepting all kindergartener students from the neighborhood and notify 3rd graders of no 6-8th grade option in 2011; and 3) Phase Hillcrest to K-5 by 2011 and shrink boundary to 40 incoming kindergarteners. (Without looking at the prior proposal, these appear to be the same proposals.
