The Special Committee on Admission, Attendance and
Boundaries will not make its recommendation to the Board of Education at the
upcoming December 10, 2008 meeting as was originally planned. The new date
will be December 17, 2008. Please mark your
calendar.
I just want to make sure that those of you who have been most active
on the boundaries issue are aware, and can communicate with others, that the
item from the Special Committee on Boundaries and Attendance will be heard
only on Dec. 17, there will be no hearing on Dec. 10. I've been in
communication with Board Chair David Kakishiba and Director Gary Yee about the
scheduling issue. They have explained why the item will be heard only on
Dec. 17:
1. The meeting Dec. 10 is a special meeting of the Board,
not a regular meeting. The agenda for the meeting is already very long and
they expect the meeting to go until 11 even without this item. One of the
items for Dec. 10 is a report from the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance
Team (FCMAT) that recommends returning OUSD to full local control. You can
see the FCMAT report by following the link for the Dec. 10 agenda at
http://ousd.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx.
2.
The boundaries subcommittee item can be both read and heard on Dec. 17. It
is not a policy change, but a recommendation/ direction to staff.
I realize that many of you have been planning your calendars around
attendance at these two meetings, based on the discussion at the 11/21
subcommittee meeting. I apologize for the relatively late notice, but I
have asked and been informed that this is the plan. I do hope you will
attend on Dec. 17 on this specific issue. But I also hope you will be
mindful of the important issue that will be discussed this Wednesday.
There also will be this Weds an update on the budget and what we can expect out
of Sacramento (another lengthy item even though we can't expect much).
A priority that we might all consider working on together is the State
budget and overall funding for education. It's really very grim over the
next several years, and I believe there are systemic changes statewide that must
be made to restore our educational system.
Thanks for your commitment to
public education in Oakland.
