Those of you that have suffered these many years with a HQD system finally have an alternative to the Decca Ribbon Supertweeter.

If you aren’t old enough to remember the HQD system, have a look…    Hartley woofers, four Quad 57’s, and Decca Ribbons

Very nice!

I like the pic of the HQD system you posted but what's missing is all the Mark Levinson equipment ( ML-2's Amps and ML-1 preamp & LNC - crossover).

I did have a single pair of Quads with the Decca tweeters years ago…  tried 3-5 different subwoofers…  sort of a mini-HQD system driven by Quad 303’s.

Close, but no cigar.     Wish I still had them.

Do not forget two pair of ML 15 class A monoblocks! It was a Levinson speaker system after all.

Hi again,

I had an HQ without the Decca Tweeter. Never got that last piece of the system.

I also had all the Levinson electronics to go with it. (as mentioned before).

I ended up not liking the 24" Hartley woofer in the prescribe box configuration that Mark used (after building & listening to it) and came up with a better idea!

Why not use the biggest box I had available... A total room.

So, more of an infinite baffle design I took 2 / 3/4" thick particle boards and sandwiched them together to get 1 1/2"

Then made a door for my bedroom with the Hartley mounted in it. I even put hinges on it so it still functioned as a door to get into and out of the bedroom. Side note: wife actually slept in there with the Hartley playing... I kid you not.

It sounded a lot better than the original box setup and enjoyed the virtues of it's lower end back then. To be honest, it extended the lower end of the Quads but never could keep up with their beautiful speed and detail... Thus, a compromise at least if you wanted that low end thunder.

Funny story I must add... An audiophile friend came over and after hearing "The Hartley in the Door" he just had to have one too. Sooo, he basically copied what I had but for the hinges... That's were things went wrong.

He had some latches to lock the large panel in place that he'd needed to lock and unlock every time he wanted to get into the back room. Well, one lazy incident he didn't set the locks and even had the windows open in the back room. You may have already guessed what happened.

He was sitting there listening & enjoying his HQ system and all of a sudden... boom! The Hartley door simply blew flat down into his listening room almost killing his cat and spectacularly destroyed the plastic cone of the woofer. It cupped the air as it fell forward and blew the white cone material into tiny pieces that flew everywhere. (we actually kept pieces of it as souvenirs!)

You can only imagine how he felt sitting there witnessing this happening while listening to music.

Btw the Hartley did get fixed afterwards  and the story is one of the best Audio Disasters I've ever known.  ha ha lol

Not sure what you're referring to Tom... ML- 15 monoblocks???

The Double Quads were always powered by ML-2's in the HQD system... A no holds bar 25 watt class A amp that could drive even Dayton Wright electrostats! I should know, I owned them & did just that... Not very loud I might add.

The ML-3 was the next in the offering from Mark and was a beast of a stereo amp... I played with that too.

After Mark lost his company & name (literally) he then started up Cello Ltd. With Tom Colangelo his chief engineer.

Don't now if you guys knew who Tom C. was but he was responsible for so much of the designs that Mark offered. He died in a car accident in 2007... He will be missed!

I still own ML preamps (LNP-2, ML-1 & ML-7) and bought my Cello equipment right from Mark himself. He took an ML-7 in trade for the newly offered Audio Suite back then and told me he used/gave the ML-7 to his mother, in her system. ha!

In fact, I'm using that same Cello Audio Suite in my current system right now. Best preamp I've ever heard & own IMHO :)

ML 2. Got the number wrong. 200 watts into 1 ohm. 400 at 0.5 ohm. In my opinion, the only true class A amplifier ever built.
