The Leakey Death Ride on Steroids

Remember the email I sent out on The Leakey Death Ride 169K permanent?  Now imagine adding an out-and-back to Camp Wood from Leakey.  It’s just one more control…easy eh?

 

That stretch of road has probably one of the best climbs in Texas.  Long, steep, full of switch backs all in jagged rocky cliffs.  Then you finally get to the top.  Now you fearfully ride your brakes down the other side as you struggle to keep you bike at 40 mph and not hit any rocks in all of those twisting turns.  Scared out of your wits you finally arrive at a Shamrock gas station in a little western town called Camp Wood.  Now you fuel up, turn your bike around and…do it again!

 

Now open for business is the Leakey Camp Wood Extra 236K permanent out of Bandera.  All of the famous hills of The Leakey Death Ride…Condor’s Nest, Mill Creek Pass, Vanderpool Hill, Sparrow’s Nest, Cuckoo’s Nest, and Tarpley Pass plus that wonderful stretch of road between Leakey and Camp Wood…twice.

 

Route number 3168.  The cue sheet is attached for your enjoyment.

There’s a non-rando around here (Randall Stephens) who puts together multi-day rides under the name Texas Hill Country Bike Tours.  He posted this 500 mile route the other day (which he might cover in the space of a week or so.)  For illustration purposes, in the bottom left hand corner you’ll see Camp Wood and from there heading east, the profile gets really interesting!  Doesn’t quite get to Bandera, but gives you the general idea:

Gary, let’s try your route sometime when it’s not so HOT (which ought to go without saying, but I know better) and when we can get a handful of people together.  I am all in favor of putting still more Hill Country into Hill Country Randonneurs!
