5 days to go before the 11th annual Hike for Life on Sunday, May 21... the countdown begins!

Please remember that this is an event to raise funds for the NY Blood Center, so don't be shy about asking people to sponsor you or make donations!    Financial ones and pints of blood!!

The most often asked hiking question is about weather (see below).
The second most often asked question is about what to wear for the hikes.

You will receive a NY Blood Center Hike for Life tshirt at the beginning of your hike.  Please wear this shirt as it identifies you to the other hikers and volunteers, will give us more uniformity as a group, greater visibility in the woods and along roads, and added comfort if it gets warm and sunny.  You will also be given a colored wristband at registration and it is important to wear throughout the day as this identifies which hike group you are with, as well as giving you entry to the picnic.

As for what to wear on the rest of the body, please dress for comfort.  Most important is footwear.  This is not the day to test out the brand new boots.  Wear what is comfortable on your feet - good socks and either boots or sneakers.  Layer if it's cool in the morning.  Even though you will warm up during the day, by evening it will cool off and you may need the extra layer again.

Please remember to bring your smile and a sense of pride!  You are all helping the NY Blood Center save lives.  Enjoy the day and have fun!!

ARRIVAL:

Please go to Heckscher State Park Field 6 for all of the hikes, to register and turn in pledge forms and donations.  Check-in times are 2:15pm for the 3 miler, 1:30pm for the 5 miler, 11:00am for the 11 miler, and 6:30am for the 28.

DONATIONS:
There is still time to collect pledges and donations!
PAPER:  Please print out a pledge form and bring all donations and registration money to the event.  (You can also mail it if you cannot attend.  Address is on pledge form.)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Most of your other questions will probably be answered in the FAQs on Hike for Life web page.

http://www.nybc.org/hikeforlife

PICNIC:
After the hikes, there will be a fun picnic with delicious food at Heckscher State Park Field 6.  All hikers are invited!

WEATHER:
Most importantly, the Hike for Life event is ON no matter what the weather is doing.  All hikes will be happening.  If by any chance there is a rain shower accompanied by electricity, we will do what the beaches do - take shelter and wait it out until it is safe to proceed.  If there is just rain, we'll just have soggy hikers.  Please bring appropriate gear and attire for the weather, should it be inclement.  Hey, at least there is no chance of snow in the forecast? :)

Thanks (again) for all of your support for HFL and for the NY Blood Center!
Your efforts will make the 11th Annual Hike for Life a great success!

If any questions, please email, call or text through Saturday evening.
On Sunday, please contact Natalie at 516-903-5095, as I will not be easily reachable during the hike.
Hope to see you on the trails on May 21!

Give blood! Save lives!!
Please donate if you can. Supply is low right now and every pint can help someone.
Find a blood drive or donation center near you at nybc.org

*** Please note that all of these hikes are coordinated through the LI Greenbelt Trail Conference, a non-profit organization that maintains over 200 miles of trails, advocates for preservation of open space, and leads approximately 200 free hikes annually.  Visit www.ligreenbelt.org  to learn more and become a member of this worthwhile group!  Plus, additional volunteers always welcome!

Enjoy,
Shari
