I want to write the Syntax Highlighter for the language called "freemarker"(template creation language)

The language was similar to HTML but the tag will have this format {ex: <#if>.... </#if>}

I want to write the syntax highlighter for this case. So i want to have  basic under standing how syntax highlighter works.

Can anybody tell me,

What needs to be done and the steps that i need to follow.

Also the License details about syntax highlighter.
