Faces of BNB
These Mayan children were photographed while perched on top of their farm's pedal-powered well water pump. Their family farm is located in a rural mountainous area about 30 minutes from San Andres Itzapa in Guatemala, where electricity is scarce. They purchased this bicycle-powered pump from Maya Pedal, an organization supported by shipments of bikes from Bikes Not Bombs. (See news below on a shipment that just went out, and more on the pedal-powered machines.) Carlos Marroquin, lead engineer of Maya Pedal, states "These machines are helping Mayan families afford to stay on their farms and maintain our traditional ways of life." (Photo by David Branigan)

Author Discussion TOMORROW! "Stop Signs: Cars and Capitalism on the Road to Economic, Social and Ecological Decay"
Thursday, May 19
7:30pm-9:00pm
at the Bikes Not Bombs Hub, 284 Amory Street, Jamaica Plain

Join us for an insightful and engaging discussion with Yves Engler and Bianca Mugyenyi, the authors of the book Stop Signs, which examines why, as a society, we are so enthralled by the automobile and what impact this has had on our economy and environment. We are excited to bring these authors to Bikes Not Bombs and provide an opportunity to discuss and reflect on how car-culture leads to war, inequality and environmental destruction. The book will be released in May 2011 from Fernwood Publishing and will be available for purchase at the event.

This event is  co-sponsored by the On The Move Coalition. Light refreshments will be provided by Amir's Natural Foods. We hope to see you here!

563 Bikes Shipped to Maya Pedal in Guatemala!
A mural painted on the wall at Maya Pedal shows their most popular machine, a pedal-powered dual purpose corn sheller and grain grinder. (Photo by David Branigan.)
Undeterred by a few rain showers this past Sunday, May 15th, dedicated BNB volunteers helped load 563 bikes and parts into a 40 ft shipping container destined for Maya Pedal in Guatemala.

Maya Pedal will utilize a portion of the bicycles to fabricate bicimaquinas (pedal-powered machines) that are used to de-grain and grind corn, pump water from up to 30 meters deep, de-pulp coffee, wash clothes, and more... all fueled by human power. This technology is so important because it enables people in rural areas to improve their productivity and standard of living without increasing their dependence on nonrenewable energy; this technology is so appropriate because it is composed of affordable and readily accessible bicycle parts that can be easily maintained and repaired locally - a brilliant option for rural development and autonomy. The remainder of the bikes will be refurbished and sold - providing options for affordable transportation to Guatemalans.

Here is a full view of the pedal-powered water pump in use by a farming family in Guatemala. (See also photo at the top of this news.) The bicycle at left pulls a rope with wooden washers up from plastic pipe which reaches the bottom of the well, circulating the rope over the pulley wheel at the top (made from a child-size bike). Water raised by the washers spills out into the horizontal orange pipe and fills the blue tub at right. The family has a stable of animals and fields of crops, and use this pump as their water source for both farm and household uses. (Photo by David Branigan.)

Bloco AfroBrazil has performed at every Green Roots Festival to date and will be returning in 2011! Also returning is the Paa Seck Diery Band with traditional Senegalese drum and dance. Also note that you can take drum or dance lessons from Paa Seck at The Dance Complex or the Cambridge YWCA, and look for a CD release show in June.

Volunteers Needed to Sign Up for Bike-A-Thon Help!
Volunteers form the backbone of the Bike-A-Thon and Green Roots Festival, and we'll need help both beforehand and on the day of the event. Each year volunteers contribute by marking the routes, running the rest stops, corking difficult intersections along the rides, serving food, staffing the festival, serving as medical or mechanics ride support, assisting with set up and take down, and more! Some roles require special skills, like photography or medical training, and they have differing time requirements based on the schedule of the day.

Each volunteer also gets to share in the food that we have for returning riders and gets a 2012 Bikes Not Bombs t-shirt in addition to the fun of helping pulling off BNB's biggest event of the year!

To join the team, sign up online and then we'll be in touch to work out the details of your volunteer role.

This is a great way to contribute in advance of the event, and groups are welcome.

Dates: May 20th, June 3rd, June 10th, 4:15 - 6:00pm each time

If you're interested, contact Jeremy at 617-522-0222 or jer...@bikesnotbombs.org. No prior volunteering experience is necessary, just a positive attitude and willingness to help out!

Pedal Powered Generators and Alumni Program Update
This spring the BNB Youth Employees undertook the task of building two pedal powered electricity generators which were sponsored by The Rose Kennedy Greenway and Allston-Brighton Bikes. Under the guidance of Adult Instructor John Rosenwinkle and with the help of many others, the youth learned about electrical circuits, how to weld and solder, and got to explore bicycle technology in a new way. Keep an eye out for both generators around town this summer!

The BNB Alumni program is up and running for the spring. In April we biked to Mel’s Hyde Park Bicycle Shop and learned about building low riders and running a Bike Shop, and did a scavenger hunt and writing workshop with The Greater Boston Bigfoot Research Center (826 Boston). The youth also rode decorated bikes in the Wake Up The Earth Parade and hit the city's newest bike lanes on a guided ride as part of the Boston Bike Week. To get involved with Alumni Programs visit Facebook.com/BNByouth or e-mail Jes...@bikesnotbombs.org to be added to the events mailing list!

The MBTA, in collaboration with the Chelsea Creek Action Group (CCAG) and MassBike initiated a six-month pilot project on the Blue Line beginning March 19, 2011 expanding bicycle access during rush hours. Bicycles will be allowed on the Blue Line at all times except from 7-9AM towards Bowdoin and 4-6PM towards Wonderland weekdays. The changes provides an additional two hours of bike access during peak directions (inbound in the morning and outbound in the afternoon), and an additional six hours of bike access in the reverse-peak. MassBike Seeks Office Space
It's generally a good thing to be a growing organization. For the first time in MassBike's history, we have three full-time staff positions, with the hope of expanding it to six by 2014. More staff means more time spent on bicycling advocacy and education aimed at making Massachusetts the best place in the nation to ride a bicycle. However, like a hermit crab seeking a new shell, our growth in staff and volunteers means we need to find a bigger office. While we are sad to leave our home at 171 Milk Street, we are also very excited at the prospect of finding a new shell. If you know of a space that might be a good fit for MassBike, we'd love to hear from you. We're looking for a location that is easy to get to from all areas of Boston and that has access to the T. We need a space that is around 1000 square feet or more. Amazingly good rent deals are also much appreciated. If you do know of an available space, please send an email to da...@massbike.org.

The People's Rally for Clean and Healthy Air
Send a message to Senator Brown: "Protect people not polluters!"
Friday, May 20th, 2011 at 12pm
15 New Sudbury Street, Boston, MA (In front of Scott Brownʼs office building, Government Center T-Stop)

On April 7, 2011, Senator Scott Brown voted to gut the Clean Air Act, threatening the health of our families, the economic strength of our communities, and the livability of our planet. Was it because corporate polluters poured over $1.9 million into his last campaign?
He voted to:
* Make Massachusetts families sick: coal pollution in MA alone kills 251 people and causes 471 heart attacks every year
* Decreases economic incentives for the development of clean and renewable technology that would provide local, green, and fair jobs in Massachusetts
* Secure soaring profits for corporate polluters at the expense of our familiesʼ health and the climate

Ask him to reverse his position next time this comes up for a vote!

Bring the War Dollars Home!
Saturday, May 21, 1:00 - 3:00 pm
Boston Public Library, Mezzanine Conference Room
700 Boylston St., Copley Sq., Boston, 02116
Closest T-Stops: Green Line - Copley & Orange Line - Back Bay
We are told that there is no money for good jobs, good schools, good health care, good housing and clean energy. At the same time we are spending trillions of dollars on wars that leave us all unsafe but benefit weapons makers and oil companies. And we're all paying the price... veterans who come home looking for jobs, school children whose schools are closing, parents who must choose between the mortgage or rent and health insurance. One solution is to bring the war dollars home! Read more at http://warisacrime.org/content/boston-event-bring-war-dollars-home . For more information call, 888-400-1225

We Shall Not Be Moved is an ongoing multimedia documentary project by Kelly Creedon, in partnership with City Life/Vida Urbana and the Bank Tenant Association. The project tells the story of a growing grassroots movement that is using the power of bringing people together to help keep families in their homes after foreclosure. Since 2008, City Life/Vida Urbana has focused on preventing the eviction of both former owners and renters resulting from a rise in foreclosures. The Bank Tenant Association was created to stop evictions through a combination of legal defense, collective action, and political protest. This discussion will be moderated by Susie Husted and will focus on the relationships that were built during the documentary project's development and exhibition.
