Subject: Citizens Urged to be on the Lookout for Storm Grate Thieves

                                                          September 23, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Residents in neighborhoods throughout Nashville are asked to be on the lookout for the persons responsible for a recent rash of storm grate thefts from streets in various communities, including Goodlettsville, West Nashville, East Nashville and Antioch.

At least 90 storm grates have been stolen since July.  The thefts leave large open holes at the sides of roadways which are dangerous to children, joggers, walkers and pets.  Metro Water Services must also replace the grates at a cost to the city.

The thieves seen in neighborhoods this month are described as two white men in their 30s to 40s who are traveling in an older model maroon pickup truck, perhaps a Ford Ranger.  It is presumed that the grates are being sold to a scrap metal dealer, perhaps out of state.

Anyone seeing storm grates being taken from roadways is urged to record the license plate number of the vehicle, if possible, and immediately contact the Emergency Communications Center at 862-8600.
