Good afternoon,
I am looking for insight on how other schools support their military community with paying for counseling at the university.
Thank you,

Here at Stockton University we were lucky enough to hire a counselor specifically for veterans. Although the counselor works out of the Counseling Center and does carry some not veteran clients, she is the primary point of contact/referral for any veteran students wanting/needing counseling. Eventually we hope she can work directly out of the Military and Veteran Services Office (once they move and have a space of their own). We do have a small lounge for our vets and our counselor often stops by to say hello and play video games with the students, her way of breaking the ice.
All of our counseling services are free for students.

We have a similar set up to the one Amy described. It’s been nice for our veterans to have the option of coming to Counseling Services to see a different counselor, or staying at the Student Veteran’s Center to see the gentleman who sets up shop there several times a week. Some veterans don’t want to associate with other veterans, so have both options seems helpful.

We have a large military population in our area and we are also adjacent to a naval base.
Our counseling staff has a full time psychologist who works closely with our student veteran org, SVO lounge, and our department is very aware of and receptive to the needs of our student veterans.
Student veterans are welcomed to walk into her walk-in blocks twice a week; she also has a block of time once a week when she is in the SVO lounge to just be available and talk with students if they need her to.
For non-student veterans, we also have an MOU (although I think it is being re-structured or is on hiatus with some staff changes at the moment) where they can see the representative from the VA office in this space. Student veterans can use that service as well if they prefer to not see our psychologist on staff.
Hope that helps!
