Good morning,
I am writing to inquire about liability if a non-student unregistered guest were to suffer injury, illness, and/or death due while on campus. The topic came up this morning in our BIT meeting after a non-student was transported for intoxication over the weekend. Additionally, does it make a difference if the non-student was a registered guest?
Any thoughts or information would be appreciated.
Thank you,

I wouldn’t even want to guess at liability without lawyers involved.
I don’t think there’s any sort of agreement between the University and any particular guest the same way that there are for students. And I know as housing we respond almost identically to a situation involving a guest as a student – some of our reporting requirements
change a bit. But legal liability is a whole different kettle of fish!

As Stephanie shared, I wouldn’t be able to speak to the liability piece (definitely consult with your university’s general counsel). I can add that on our campus when a guest (registered/unregistered) is brought onto campus by a student, that student is held accountable for any violation of our student code that occurs and would go through our conduct process. Physical response would typically be the same for a medical emergency of a guest, except for staff accompaniment/response to the hospital.
