Hi all,

I hope the weather where you are is enjoyable J

We are struggling with options for students whose parents make too much money for them to qualify for the local food bank but do not give their student money for food.  I’m wondering how others are handling issues where students do not have enough to eat.  Do you have an on campus food pantry; soup kitchen; meal plan based on need etc. ?   Any ideas or advice would be awesome.

Thank you,

Karla

We have a food pantry that is open to students 3 days a week. We also, for our students events with swag giveaways, ask our students for non-perishable items in order to participate.

Starting a food bank is a goal I have here. But for now I refer them to local food pantries in the community. Having spoken with most of them, they’ll accept our student ID as proof of identity and address. Most of the local pantries don’t require any sort of means testing – a few require a Medicaid card – but I have had great luck making a phone call and even sometimes getting help for students on the days the pantries are normally closed.  It requires a lot of phone calls and research especially if you don’t have a community resources list already.

I’m lucky in that our county has a great directory through the United Way

We have a food pantry here where benefits are available to any student who does not have an unlimited meal plan.  It’s worked out pretty well so far, especially since we have a lot of students who are international and do not qualify for SNAP or have difficulties accessing community food pantries.  I also find that it helps to normalize that food insecurity is something that students deal with.

Additionally, we partnered with our college of social work to have a benefit bank location on campus that we can refer students to so they can sign up for all benefits in one place with some assistance.

In our office our staff donate food items for emergency food supply (1 meal) that we can give in session to make sure students have something while they are waiting to get in with food pantry.

Hi friends,

This comes up quite a bit on the listserv so I would encourage others to view the archives.

We are working on a food pantry but in the meantime offer a variety of short term options. I give out meal cards to students in need for between $50-100 as does our Interfaith Center. All students/faq/staff can also sign up for free food notifications to minimize food waste at events -- http://freefood.johnshopkins.edu/#/

We have a food pantry once a week that is currently in an off-campus Lutheran Center (located within the campus locale).  A nice twist to this is that faculty and staff can sign up to ‘host’ hot finger foods and drinks for students waiting for their turn at the pantry.  We have also collected new and gently used crockpots to give to interested students, as well as recipes using items frequently found in the pantry.  The center is proving to be too small and we are looking for other options.  Our administration is requiring it to be off-campus if we are offering anything besides non-perishables.  The pantry is managed as a collaborative effort between our office of Student Involvement and our local social service agency.  Student Involvement also keeps non-perishables on hand in the office for students who need things outside of the pantry.  Donations are solicited/accepted on an ongoing basis, and we have found the university community to be very responsive, as well as local churches.

We have a food pantry on campus that students are allowed access to as long as they are registered students. There are also local food banks that are not income based that we advise students of as well. Additionally, I'm currently working to setup a meal swipe program on our campus in conjunction with our dining services so that students can donate a specified number of meals per semester for access to students who may be in need. If you have specific questions for my program, feel free to send me a separate email.
Thanks,
Qiana

HI Karla:

We have a on-campus food pantry which is housed in our Campus Ministry. We also provide some local supermarket gift cards to our students at Shop Rite or Walmart to help with food over break (the non-perishables). We have a fund that is generated by alumni donations (Angel fund) that contributes to students who need emergency assistance. The tricky part is that since it is all donated money, once the funds are depleted, it may be difficult to refund the program.

We have a food donation program that runs weekly with the support of volunteer students to keep grocery bags at food zone locations across campus. These are safe spaces for those who need them. We just have the student fill out a survey when they pick up, no questions asked. We also set up a meal card donation program with the support of Chartwells and campus cards office.
We just this week started a clothing donation program with a location open once a month supported by volunteer students.
