Simple example of watching x and y values

The FAQ talks about differences in properties inside `chartConfig` and `chartConfig.options`. Could someone point me to a simple example of how I might be able to update a chart when x and y values change?

Context: I am trying to understand how to structure my code so that an empty chart is drawn as soon as my directive is created. Initialization in the directive is making an http request to get the x & y data. As soon as that data arrives, I want the chart to be updated without redrawing the entire chart (preferably with animations).

I looked at the basic example, but that did not answer my question. Now looking at http://jsfiddle.net/pablojim/7cAq3/ - it has quite a bit going on but I should be able to extract the concepts. If there is something else that you now may be better, please let me know.
