Postdoctoral Fellow (2 Years) — Quantum Matter Under High Pressure

Location: University of Sharjah (UoS) & American University of Sharjah (AUS), United Arab Emirates
Start date: January 1, 2026 (flexible within reason)
Appointment: Up to 2 years (annual renewal, contingent on performance and funding)

About the Project

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position on a joint UoS–AUS research program exploring layered quantum materials under extreme conditions—in particular low temperature and high pressure. The project targets the dynamic, structural, thermodynamic, transport, electrical, and magnetic properties of quantum materials, with emphasis on two-dimensional metallic and insulating magnets and superconductivity in hydrides.

You will lead experimental investigations using a range of probes; for selected systems, the work will begin with materials synthesis and characterization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute high-pressure, low-temperature experiments on quantum materials.
  • Perform and analyze transport, magnetic, thermodynamic, and structural measurements.
  • Contribute to materials synthesis (e.g., single crystals/thin flakes) and post-growth characterization.
  • Collaborate across UoS and AUS labs; coordinate instrument time (including potential synchrotron X-ray runs).
  • Publish results in leading journals and present at international conferences.
  • Help mentor students and maintain experimental setups and documentation.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field (at start of appointment).
  • Proven experience with high-pressure techniques (e.g., diamond anvil cells; pressure calibration; in-situ measurements).
  • Demonstrated independence and initiative in driving research.
  • Hands-on expertise with several of the following:
    • Transport (resistivity, Hall) and magnetic measurements (e.g., SQUID/VSM),
    • Thermodynamic measurements (e.g., specific heat),
    • Structural probes (e.g., X-ray diffraction under pressure).
  • Desirable: experience in single-crystal growth and materials synthesis; prior synchrotron X-ray studies and data analysis.

What We Offer

  • A collaborative environment across two leading UAE institutions (UoS & AUS).
  • Access to modern low-temperature/high-pressure instrumentation and characterization facilities.
  • Opportunities for synchrotron collaborations and international visibility.
  • Competitive funding for research consumables and travel (per project policies).

How to Apply

Please combine the following into ONE PDF file:

  1. Motivation letter (1–2 pages) describing your fit, relevant experience, and proposed research directions.
  2. CV (including contact information).
  3. List of publications (highlight up to THREE key papers and your contribution).
  4. Names and contact details of two referees (letters may be requested later).

Email the PDF to Mahmoud Abdel-Hafiez at mahmou...@gmail.com with the subject line:
"Postdoc Application — Quantum Matter Under High Pressure — [Your Name]"

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
