Dear ,

The USF Department of Physics, in collaboration with the University of California San Diego, the High Energy Density Science Center at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is offering a unique interdisciplinary course, "Warm Dense Matter: Concepts and Fundamentals", for graduate and senior undergraduate students in Fall 2025.

Warm Dense Matter (WDM) science lies at the intersection of condensed matter physics, dense liquids, and plasma physics. It is characterized by pressures above 1 megabar and temperatures of several thousand Kelvin - conditions that occur in planetary interiors, white dwarf atmospheres, meteorite impacts, and inertial confinement fusion experiments.

The course begins with a bootcamp to provide a focused refresher on classical and quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, hydrodynamics, and transport phenomena. Students will also learn Python fundamentals and gain proficiency in the scientific Python ecosystem using Jupyter notebooks – skills essential for completing course assignments and as well as documenting, analyzing, and presenting results in their future research.

The course is delivered synchronously online and team-taught by experts from several academic institutions and national laboratories.

Students from academic institutions may receive credit. More information is provided in the syllabus: https://usf.box.com/s/j2bwdhwe6y4yxsyvzwj8g3tuzfqu8lwb

I would greatly appreciate your help in sharing this opportunity with interested colleagues and especially with students who may wish to take the course. The course starts on August 26, 2025.

Thank you and best regards,

Ivan
