Joint Appointment: Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT), Ningbo, China & University of Edinburgh, UK  

Research Project: Synthesis of novel ternary metal carbonitride materials under high pressure and high temperature conditions

Start Date: Mid 2026.

Salary: 350,000 - 550,000 RMB/year (about £38,000-£60,000 /year)

Positions Available: 1  

Duration: 2 years (with the possibility to extend an additional year)

Position Overview:

We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position jointly hosted by the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) in China and the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions (CSEC) of the University of Edinburgh in the UK. The research project focuses on synthesizing ternary metal carbonitride functional materials using high-pressure and high-temperature techniques, specifically with the laser-heated diamond anvil cell (LHDAC). Synchrotron-based single-crystal X-ray diffraction will be the primary probing technique, and candidates are expected to travel regularly to the ESRF (Grenoble, France), DESY (Hamburg, Germany), Diamond (Didcot, UK), and the APS (Illinois, USA).

The successful candidate will work under the joint supervision of Dr. Akun Liang and Dr. Dominique Laniel, conducting experiments at the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions (CSEC) of the University of Edinburgh (UK), with full funding provided by the EIT (China).

Key Responsibilities:

1. Conduct high-pressure experiments to synthesize ternary metal carbonitride materials.

2. Utilize LHDAC, synchrotron-based single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy for material characterization.

3. Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team.

4. Write high-impact publications.

Required Qualifications:

1. A PhD (or expected within six months) in a relevant field such as high-pressure physics, chemistry, or materials science.

2. A strong academic record, proven research ability and English writing skills.

3. Experience with high-pressure experimental techniques and evidence of published research as first or corresponding author in peer-reviewed journals.
