Dear Webmaster,

I would like to request that the following position be posted on the Jobs page on behalf of Professor Renata Wentzcovitch.

Title:
Postdoctoral Research Scientist – Computational Mineral Physics

Institution:
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University (New York, USA)

Description:
The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in Computational Mineral Physics. The position is part of the National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded project "Machine Learning Serpentines."

The successful candidate will be an experienced computational materials physicist or scientist with advanced skills in scientific computing and materials simulations. Expertise in materials theory, first-principles modeling (DFT/ab initio methods), and high-performance computing is essential. Experience with free energy and elasticity calculations is highly desirable but not required.

A primary goal of this project is to develop a database of thermodynamic and thermoelastic properties of serpentine phases for use in geophysical modeling, particularly for interpreting seismic tomography models of subduction zones. The project involves regular collaboration with seismologists and offers an opportunity to work across disciplinary boundaries (mineral physics, geophysics, geodynamics).

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Computational Mineral/Materials Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field (recently completed or near completion).
  • Strong record of research in computational methods applied to minerals/materials.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines.

Terms:

  • Initial appointment: 1 year.
  • Possible extension: up to a total of ~2.5 years, contingent on performance and funding.
  • Salary: $72,116/year plus Columbia University benefits.
  • Location: Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University.

How to Apply:
Applications are accepted online only at:
https://academic.careers.columbia.edu/positions/172477

Deadline:
Please apply by January 31, 2026, for full consideration. The position will remain open until filled.

Equal Opportunity Statement:
Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran.

Please let me know if you need any additional details or attachments.

Thank you very much.

Vishal Manve (Vishy).
