This past month we've had some exciting workshops!

Some of the groups that we had the honor of working with in April
are:
Mission Neighborhood Graduates: Digital Storytelling
Dimensions Clinic: Go Healthy Series
West Side Teen CORE: Zine Making Series
Seneca Center:Working with LGBTQIQ Youth training for the probation
department.
Youth Link New Mexico: Training of Trainers day training

We were also honored to welcome visitors from an organization in
Stockholm Switzerland called RSFL. The Swedish Federation for Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights. The group wanted to talk about
different program ideas for Queer Youth. They were a great group and
we wish them the best of luck! http://www.rfsl.se/stockholm/

Also, Tomas, one of the HIFY trainers is currently attending the SFSI
Training (San Francisco Sex Information) which consists of 4 weekends
of trainings about anything and everything to do with sex.
http://sfsi.org/wiki/Main_Page

Carnelius and I were also honored to do a training for Peer Educators
in New Mexico. Youth Link brings youth from across the state to
Albuquerque for a day of training and skill building. The youth were
awesome and we all had a lot of fun! Best of luck to all the NM
Groups!

We're currently planning on opening our computer lab for "Lab hours"
beginning in June. This means that any youth interested in creating a
digital story can come by and work at your own pace. We'll let you all
know the days and times in the next Youth Email! Have an awesome May!

We recently sent out a newsletter that we're going to upload to the
Google Files so check it out soon!

Youth Development Peer Network Updates!
Howdy Youth Workers:

The Youth Development Peer Network has been busy at work pulling
together youth workers from all across the Bay Area to produce a
number of events and resources. We know that this is a busy time of
year for you, so we are offering many different ways to get involved,
get connected, and CELEBRATE! Check out www.ydpn.org for more info!

Here are a couple of our most recent and inspiring offerings:

A Day of Rejuvenation and Self Care CURRICULUM – Crafted with love by
Sangita Kumar, Margaret Bacon Schulze, Victoria Welle, and moi, A Day
of Rejuvenation and Self-Care is a three-hour workshop that youth
workers can do with their peers, youth, and families. It explores what
rejuvenation and self-care mean and how they show up in our lives
through different art-mediums. The curriculum is completely free and
downloadable on www.ydpn.org.

We Are Youth Workers 3-Day Extravaganza (June 10 –12) – The YDPN is
honored to be hosting 20-25 youth workers from Indiana June 10-12. To
celebrate their arrival and all of our accomplishments this year, the
YDPN is pulling together a number of collaborators to honor YOU! This
three-day event includes an Exhibition and Happy Hour (June 10 in San
Francisco), a Networking Day (June 11, location TBA), The Red Carpet
Festival (June 11, 7pm to 10pm in Oakland, CA), and Site Visits (June
12) including a Funders, Youth Philanthropy, and Youth Worker Mix and
Mingle. Please visit www.ydpn.org to get all the info!

Youth Worker Brown Bags: Community and Connectedness (April 27) –
While each of the Youth Worker Brown Bags focus on specific issues
that affect youth workers and their jobs, one objective of every
session is to meet new people, have lively conversation and inspire
each other to think about youth work in a creative and supported
environment. Youth workers need to rely on their community network
for professional and personal support, funding, best practices and
organizational collaboration. That is why April’s Brown Bag Topic is
CONNECTEDNESS AND COMMUNITY.

LAST…We are seeking FILMS ABOUT YOUTH WORK! Part of We Are Youth
Workers is The Red Carpet Festival, a film festival about youth work
and documentary launch about youth workers. Visit www.ydpn.org to
download the CALL FOR ENTRIES.

Peace,

Your Friendly, Neighborhood YDPN

Call for Nominations:
2009 MARIO SAVIO YOUNG ACTIVIST AWARD

The Board of Directors of the Mario Savio Memorial Lecture & Young
Activist Award invites you to nominate a candidate for the 12th Annual
Young Activist Award. The award this year carries a cash prize of
$6,000, divided equally between the prize-winner and his or her
organization.

This award is presented to a young person (or persons) with a deep
commitment to human rights and social justice and a proven ability to
transform this commitment into effective action. The nominees should
have demonstrated leadership ability, creativity and integrity.

Specific eligibility requirements are:
* Under age 26 by 9/1/09;
* Engaged in activism for social change, promoting the values of
peace, human rights, economic or social justice, or freedom of
expression;
* Acting within the context of an organization, social movement, or
larger community effort;
* Considered an inspirational leader or motivating force by others
in that context;
* Work is centered in the United States;
* Able to attend award ceremony in Berkeley, CA (Oct.-Nov.;
expenses paid).

Preference will be given to candidates who have not yet been widely
recognized and who do not have personal privilege or a strong
institutional base of support.

This award honors the late Mario Savio (1942-1996), who came to
national prominence as a spokesperson for the Berkeley Free Speech
Movement in 1964. His moral clarity, his eloquence, and his
democratic style of leadership impelled thousands of his fellow
Berkeley students to struggle for, and win, more political freedom,
inspiring a generation of student activism. Savio remained a lifelong
fighter for human rights and social justice.

NOMINATIONS ARE DUE BY June 30, 2009. Nomination forms and additional
information are available at www.savio.org or e-mail: sa...@sinic.net.
