HIFY UPDATES
This past month we've had some exciting workshops!
Some of the groups that we had the honor of working with in June are:
LYRIC: Go Healthy Series
Good Samaritan Family Health Center: Inservice
Seneca Center: Inservice
Jamestown Community Center: Digital Storytelling Series
Dimensions Clinic: Go Healthy Series
In June we had an exciting opportunity to team up with the LGBT
Center in their Townhall meeting on Homophobia in Schools. I was on a
panel of different staff from community organizations that address
homophobia in schools. Representatives from SFUSD presented their
research on incidences of homophobia in all of the schools in the
district. You can check out the research by visiting
http://www.healthiersf.org/LGBTQ/GetTheFacts/health.html
Other panelists were Denny David from LYRIC, Tamara Costa from CUAV,
Erik Martinez from the SF LGBT Center, and Julia Po from Our Family
Coalition.
On the staffing front, we welcomed a new intern from Smith College to
HIFY. Jaymie Zapata will be with us for ten weeks as a part of the
Civil Liberties and Public Policy program. Her interests in queerness,
religion, and health make her an awesome addition to the team.
We’re gearing up for our first Provider Training which will take place
July 14th and 15th. Please check out the flyer on the Google page and
forward to any folks that might be interested. Let us know if you have
any questions!

HIFY PROVIDER TRAININGS
Greetings HIFY Family & Allies!!
I hope this e mail finds you well. I just wanted to remind you about
The Bay’s best kept secret – HIFY Provider Trainings! Many of you
have received HIFY’s in-service trainings or workshops for your youth
groups or staff, so I’m sure you know how powerful they can be!
A provider training is one step beyond, because you have the
opportunity to network and share space with your colleagues and
leaders in the field! July 15th and 16th will be “Health & Youth
Development” a classic HIFY training with a 2009 twist!
We are now offering “Beginning” and “Extended Track” courses to better
support the work of those who are new to the youth development field
as well as those who have been in the trenches for years but would
like some rejuvenation and a touch up. Attached to this e mail, you
will find a flyer with course descriptions and pricing for all
upcoming HIFY Provider Trainings. And as always you can check out
www.hify.org for updates!
**We want these trainings to be accessible to all providers seeking to
make a better world for young people. If you’re concerned about
pricing, give me a call so we can discuss the many financial aid
options!
A little more about the upcoming trainings:
All Courses meet the qualifications for 5 hours of continuing
education credit for MFTs and/or LCSWs
as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Provider
Number 4478.
Health & Youth Development (Introduction) - July 14th, 2009 10am to
4pm
While we may have great intentions in our work with young people, our
internal perceptions of “how youth are” influence the quality of work
we provide. It is possible to be youth friendly, but it is another
thing to intentionally implement authentic youth development.
This training will provide an overview of HIFY’s philosophy and
guiding principles on Youth Development. We will explore how youth
development connects to health and introduce the concepts of adultism
and being an adult ally to the young people we work with. This
course will give detailed information on how to apply the 5 themes of
youth development to everyday interactions with youth, and give
participants the opportunity to examine their own values and
assumptions, and work through current challenges in a supportive and
engaging environment. No previous experience is required for this
training. (5 CE credits)
Health & Youth Development (Extended Learning) - July 15th, 2009 10am
to 4pm
No matter how long we’ve been working with youth, there’s always more
work to be done!
This training builds on HIFY’s Introduction to Youth Development.
Participants will explore the 41 developmental assets and how to use
them in youth interventions. We will also examine the intersections of
race and youth development, the importance of media literacy, and how
to make it work at your agency. This training is especially designed
for youth workers and allies that have been in the field, and would
like a chance to reflect on Youth Development principles in greater
detail and in specific relation to challenges they currently face. Our
Introduction to Youth Development training is highly recommended. (5
CE credits)
Please help us spread the word. A lot of HIFY love, care, and
critical thought has gone into the development and updating of these
trainings, and we are excited to share them with you!!!
Both trainings will be conveniently located at:
575 Market St. (Suite 1850) San Francisco, CA 94105 a short walk from
Montgomery BART/MUNI station.
Check out the flyer saved on the Google page!

Y-STEP SUMMER INSTITUTE
Greetings from Y-Step! We hope this note finds you well and happily
anticipating the summer. We are writing to you with exciting news!
Many young people who have gone through our workshops have asked: "How
as a white youth can I continue these important conversations about
challenging racism? How can I get more actively involved in struggles
for racial justice?"
The Y-Step collective is currently planning a 3-day Summer Institute
for high-school aged white-identified youth, which will take place in
early/mid August, to help answer some of these questions. It will
offer youth the opportunity to engage and build their analysis, while
developing tools to be active participants in anti-racist struggles.
The Institute will delve deeper into issues of racial inequality as it
affects, in particular, the education system, and offer more chances
to see concrete examples of what it looks like to stand up for
justice. The Institute will allow white youth to connect with other
youth who care about justice and want to feel positively empowered to
take action.
The Summer Institute is a opportunity for white youth to deepen their
analysis- which means that we are specifically outreaching to young
folks who have either:
1. Gone through one or more Y-Step workshops
or
2. White youth who may not have gone through a Y-Step workshop before,
but who have already engaged in some level of analysis and/or
political education regarding racism, privilege, and systems of
oppression- and we are hoping that our allies and supporters can
provide referrals for young white folks who they think would be a good
match.
We need your help to SPREAD THE WORD to young white folks who are
interested in learning more about systemic injustice and how to take a
stand for a better world! Some of our outreach is being done
internally with the youth we have already worked with, but we still
need more support getting youth from other organizations, public
schools, youth who wouldn't otherwise be able to work with us, etc.
Y-Step Summer Youth Institute
The Institute will take place during ONE of the following options
(will be determined based on youth availability):
• From Sunday, August 9- Tuesday, August 11
• From Sunday, August 16- Tuesday, August 18
If interested, youth or their adult allies should email us with the
following contact information:
{Name, Phone number, Email, Age, School, Have you participated in a
workshop with Y-Step before? When?, How did you hear about Y-Step’s
Summer Institute?, Your availability for the 2 options listed above
(can you make one or both?)}

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH!
The Midwest Teen Sex Show!
http://midwestteensexshow.com/
Teens and sex. It happens. Not every teen is having sex and not every
teen is abstaining. We hope the Midwest Teen Sex Show will create a
space for frank discussion of all things related to teen sexuality.
Broadcast media shies away from any real exploration of the topic, and
they forget that not all teens live in Orange County. So subscribe on
iTunes, Miro, or your favorite RSS reader, download our latest
episode, tell your friends, and let’s get it on! (Midwest style).
