Greetings Community!
As you may have noticed, I am the new moderator of the HIFY Google
group and the new author of the HIFY messages. It’s been a long time
since you've head from us, and HIFY has been experiencing some
transition in the meantime. Bessie Natareno, previous moderator of
this group, has moved on from HIFY to pursue other opportunities to
make change and serve youth in her community.
It is my intention to continue updating the group on a more regular
basis on the happenings at HIFY, services we’re offering to the
community, and ways that you can get involved and help us continue to
grow and serve the Bay Area.
In this email you'll find:
*Fall 2008 Training Cycle information
*Go Healthy with HIFY: Our featured series for youth
*Updates on the Media and Peer Education department
*Two invitations for you to get involved!

Training Cycle:
If you’re looking for professional development opportunities, HIFY is
the answer. Our trainings for youth service providers cover HIFY
philosophies;incorporating youth development, harm reduction, and
popular education techniques to make them fun and pertinent to the
work that you’re doing at your agency. It’s also a great networking
opportunity, so we hope to see you there!
For additional information, check out the Page “2008 Training Cycle”
on the Google Group page or email Cassie Benton at

Go Healthy with HIFY!
HIFY is currently offering a workshop series that includes STI’s and
Safer Sex, HIV 101, Substance Use and Harm Reduction, and Doctors
Clinics and Testing. The workshops are free to you and we provide
incentives to the youth to participate. Unfortunately, our funding is
only for San Francisco groups currently, but Oakland groups keep in
touch and we'll notify you when we've secured funding for more East
Bay services.
Check out the Go Healthy flyer saved on the HIFY Google Groups page
for descriptions of the workshops and more information. You can also
contact Tomas Valotta at
Val...@hify.org to book a workshop series.

Media series for youth are on the way!
Currently, HIFY is revisiting our digital storytelling curricula and
will be re-launching it to the community in the following months. Our
"Tell It!" Digital storytelling workshops give youth a chance to learn
technical skills and work with equipment to write their own personal
story, record it, add pictures, and create their own mini-movie on
whatever health related topic they want. It’s a powerful way for youth
to express themselves and share it with the world. We have a computer
lab with all the necessary equipment so we just need interested groups
of youth! If you are interested in HIFY providing these trainings to
your group, please email me at

Temporary Peer Education Blackout
Unfortunately, due to loss of funding, HIFY has had to temporarily put
our Peer Health Education program on hold. We finished strong by
training another amazing group of youth over the summer and getting
them plugged into other programs so they can shine. While this means
that HIFY is now focused mainly on the San Francisco community, we
continue to seek funding so that we can return to the East Bay. In the
meantime, if you know about any job openings for youth or grant
opportunities, please let us know! Also, keep in touch. We appreciate
the Oakland community and hope to remain in the loop despite our
temporary absence.

Parent Classes
One of our newest ventures is into the realm of parent/guardian
education. If we’re focused on youth health issues, who better to
equip with up to date health information and youth development
philosophies than parents themselves. We are currently developing this
program and need YOU to help us with brainstorming and reaching our
target audience. If you work for an agency that deals with parents of
middle-high school age youth, and are interested in helping us develop
new programming please let us know!
HIFY Advisory Group
We’re always trying to improve, and with our Go Healthy series in the
earlier stages of it’s grant life, we want your expert opinions to
help us work out any kinks. We’re hoping that some community
collaborators would be willing to meet once a month to act as our
advisory group and be a sounding board for our brainstorms. It’s a
small time commitment with a big impact, you’re helping to shape
programs that reach thousands of youth a year!
If you are interested in joining the HIFY advisory group, please email
