HIFY News:
The past month has been busy for HIFY. We’ve had the privilege of
working with SFUSD wellness centers this past year and February was
the wrap up of the series of trainings we presented to the Youth
Outreach Workers and the Community Health Outreach Workers. We also
had our first training with Edgewood Kinship Services, a group that
works to keep young people in extended family care as an alternative
to foster care. We look forward to continuing our series of trainings
in the next few months. We’re continuing our Digital Storytelling
series with ILSP and will hopefully have new videos on our you tube
page soon.

Jessica Fields, HIFY’s Board President, held a fundraising event for
HIFY to celebrate the release of her book “Risky Lessons: Sex
Education and Social Inequality.” HIFY staff and board members read
excerpts from the book and spoke to the future of “comprehensive” sex
ed and the ways in which many non-abstinence-only programs are still
not making the grade. The evening was a great reminder of why we’re
all doing the work that we do.

We are still seeking a part time Bilingual Media Arts Trainer to join
the HIFY family. We’ve uploaded the job description to our Google Page
so check it out and forward widely!

HIFY is excited to be collaborating with Dimensions Clinic
(www.dimensionsclinic.org) and we’re currently seeking LGBTQIQ youth
who are interested in attending our Go Healthy Series aimed
specifically at queer youth. We’ve uploaded a flyer to the Google
Group page and will be at Dimensions beginning February 28th 12-3pm to
provide more information about the series. Please help us spread the
word!

8th Annual Ethnic Studies Conference!
March 10th, 2009 at SF State University.

If you’re looking for volunteer opportunities, outreach opportunities,
and opportunities for youth to learn- Look no further!

“We would like to provide the participants with a chance to explore
what kind of a world we are fighting to create. The theme of the
conference is people of color solidarity around the world,
acknowledging and honoring the resistance and struggle of people of
color against colonization, imperialism and conquest. Workshops should
tie into the following topics: Ethnic Studies, Resistance Movements,
History, Culture, Current Issues, Organizing, Leadership, and Healthy
Living. Students will have the opportunity to become connected to
different Bay Area youth organizations. This years Ethnic Studies
Conference will provide the space for conscious raising and alliance
building amongst students. Students from around the Bay Area are
building a movement and the conference will continue to empower young
people to educate themselves, their community and to organize for
liberation”

Rock Paper Scissors Collective:
Seeking youth art

A self-portrait can be more than a portrayal of what you look like: it
can be a group of sounds that takes the listeners through your
thoughts for a day; a sculpture that melds all your favorite things in
your room together; or it can be an image of your face-outlining the
ups and downs you have stored in your facial muscles.

RPSC is asking for young artists (age 13 to 20) to reflect deeply on
their lives through any form of art medium they desire and submit an
autobiographical piece of art for our 4th Annual Youth Art Exhibition,
opening in May 2009. This is your chance to tell Oakland your story
using any form of creativity you choose: visual, craft-based,
sculpture, airbrushing, fashion, multi-media, music, and/or
performance. Have a skill to share? Use it to tell your story!

Pieces will be juried by a group of RPSC youth interns and members.
All submissions are due by April 10th. Artists will be notified by
April 13th. Please submit JPG photos of pieces and send to:
rpscsub...@gmail.com. Arrangements can be made if a digital image
is not possible. If the piece is performance or audio, please drop off
DVDs or CDs at RPSC during store hours. Chosen artists will have the
option of selling their piece. The chosen pieces will remain on
display through May 22nd.
Teachers and classes encouraged to submit!
RPSC is also looking for young artists who have a skill to share to
teach classes at RPSC during May. Please contact,
comm...@rpscollective.com if interested.
