Hi Everyone!

We at HIFY are pleased to present the March 2011 Provider Email.

It's been a while since we sent one of these out, so firstly, a happy
and healthy 2011 to all of you – we know it’s a little late, but here
at HIFY we’re still celebrating.

Program Update:

This year, we've been working diligently on three awesome programs:
Aptos TEACH, Bay Area Divas Advocating for Safer Sex and FABULOUS -
Fierce And Beautiful Under-appreciated Leaders Organizing to Uplift
the Streets.

Aptos TEACH (Tigers Educating and Advocating for Campus Health) is a
peer education program at Aptos Middle School in San Francisco. The
program's purpose is to develop and present workshops in classrooms
about health issues that are relevant to the Aptos campus. TEACHers
learn public speaking skills, workshop facilitation, health education
and more! During the Fall and Winter, the TEACHers completed a school-
wide survey to find out the health topics their peers were most
interested in and subsequently designed three workshops on substance
use, healthy relationships and bullying. In January, the TEACHers
successfully piloted their workshops for Aptos students, family
members and friends. They are currently booking classes at Aptos and
will begin facilitating workshops in March. TEACHers will also be
designing on-line resources.

Bay Area Divas Advocating for Safer Sex is a peer education program
for youth outreach workers (YOWs.) The YOWs gain facilitation
experience, health education, outreach skills, create digital stories
and attend community events and provide workshops around the Bay
Area.

And last, but not least, HIFY was awarded a Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) grant to work with sexual
minority, street-involved, transitional age youth (TAY) in San
Francisco and Alameda County. We are in currently in the midst of
program planning, curriculum adaptation and scouting community
organizations to bring the FABULOUS program to. If you have any
contacts at agencies serving sexual minority youth or street-involved
youth or TAY, we will be launching out new program in July/August.

FABULOUS is a free, 2 month program to assist youth around
understanding the link between feelings, thoughts and behaviors in
order to better manage and reduce risky behaviors. The program
consists of 8 group sessions, one resource field trip and an
individual goal setting session. All session components are
incentivized. Contact Ray at (415) 274-1970 X0024 for more information
or referrals.
