This past month we've had some exciting workshops!

Some of the groups that we had the honor of working with in May are:
Edgewood Kinship Services San Carlos
LYRIC: Go Healthy Series
Adult Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drug Educator conference: Substance Use
and Harm Reduction
Mission Neighborhood Graduates: Digital Storytelling
Dimensions Clinic: Go Healthy Series
West Side Teen CORE: Zine Making Series
Thomas Policita Middle School
Girls on the Mic: Digital Storytelling
Edgewood: Human Sexuality Training

We're still planning on opening our computer lab for "Lab hours"
beginning in June. This means that any youth interested in creating a
digital story can come by and work at your own pace. We’ll have the
lab open on Tuesdays 4-6 for all youth and Wednesdays 4-6 open for
LGBTQIQ youth.

In other news, our wonderful UC Berkeley intern, Angel Lopez, has
graduated and is currently in Nicaragua working with the program
“Amigos de las Americas.” We wish him the best of luck and many thanks
for the work he did at HIFY. One of his projects, our most recent
newsletter, can be found on the files page of the google group.

We’re also excited to welcome back Sheena Castrejon, Peer Educator
Alum who has joined the HIFY staff as a part time bilingual health
educator. She’s getting back into the swing of things and will be
leading Spanish language workshops very soon!

Educators (POEs). This is a volunteer paid opportunity that Mission
Neighborhood Health Center is offering through its youth program. The
POEs are peer health educators who recruit other youth and invite them
to attend four sessions that they lead. They discuss topics that
include: STI transmission, recognizing and avoiding high-risk
situations, ways of protection to prevent pregnancy and sexually
transmitted
infections (STIs), relationships and communication skills. Selected

Each POE commits to 5 hours per week. The hours are distributed during

not interfere with school hours. Candidates commit to collaborate in
the program from July 2008 to June 2009.

The incentive that POEs receive for their participation is $100 per
month. The POEs begin receiving this stipend on the first day of
training. Other incentives are offered to POEs during their
participation in the program. Additional benefits include: continuing

BWOPA wants to hear from emerging leaders in our 2nd Annual Youth
Speaks Essay & Spoken Word Contest

BWOPA state board members have identified our 2009 priority issue
areas as Environment, Education, Criminal Justice and Health Care.

We know that to be effective we need youth / young adult leadership
voices in BWOPA's the decision-making process. As always, we recognize
that the importance of inclusiveness is fully demonstrated when youth
voices are represented at the discussion table.

The 2nd Annual Youth Speaks Essay and Spoken Word contest is a great
way for BWOPA members to engage our young leaders and for young
leaders it's their chance to win scholarship monies and to visit
Washington DC.

There will be a total of seven (7) finalists. One (1) winner will be
selected from each local chapter to deliver their essay/spoken word
presentations during our 2009 Biennial Leadership Conference in
November. Two (2) of these winners will be selected to receive a $500
scholarship.

Plus, as this year's bonus, BWOPA's YAC contest committee will select
up to four of the most highly motivated young leaders to win a round
trip to Washington DC to attend the Congressional Black Caucus
Legislative Conference and visit to Capitol Hill - September 23-25,
2009.

Young Leaders Speak Out & Be Counted!
Choose one of the following BWOPA priority issues to incorporate in
your 1000 word (max) winning essay / spoke word presentation. Winning
essays will be forwarded to President Obama on behalf of BWOPA and
other elected leaders.
•California's EDUCATION system - What is working / What is not?
Share your recommendations.
•Our ENVIRONMENT - What are you recommendations to preserve our
environment?
•The HEALTH CARE system - What's wrong and what's right - do we need
change?
•The CRIMINAL JUSTICE system - Is it just, especially as it relates to
African American youth/young adults? Why or why not? Share your
recommendations.

Final submissions are due to the BWOPA state headquarters by June 30,
2009. Preferably submissions can be sent via email to st...@bwopa.org,
or via U.S. mail to BWOPA, 920 Peralta Street, Suite 2a, Oakland, CA
