Dear AFATAC Learning Circle and Youth Worker Collective Family:
I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the bright, sunny,
(unusually) warm summer in the Bay Area.
I am proud to announce that Youth Worker Collective, as a part of the
AFATAC Leadership Tracks, has launched Starting with Self: A
Collaboratively Developed Curriculum by AFATAC Learning Circles. YAY!!
This is a project of love and community from after school and youth
development staff and consultants from San Francisco. It is about
building skills, learning together, and creatively exploring. It is
practical, applicable, and relevant. And it is all thanks to all of
YOU!!
To put this in some context, here are a few numbers:
• It took over 8 months to bring this all together.
• Over 30 youth workers, consultants, and community members
collectively created it.
• It contains 10 4-hour modules of training totaling 160 pages.
• Each module took a minimum of 10 hours to create/refine plus 4 hours
to facilitate totaling over 140 professional development hours
provided to the field.
• 15 cohort members, middle managers in after school programs, rooted
this project ensuring relevancy to the field.
• 10 consultants, aka content experts, lent their expertise to the
project ensuring accurate research was presented. This included
consultants donating their facilitation skills for the trainings.
• It cost approximately $37,000 to produce.
You can find the curriculum here:
http://bit.ly/anTvrD.
So...what's next? Youth Worker Collective as a part of AFATAC
Leadership Tracks is meeting the Maria Su, Director of DCYF, on
Monday, July 12 at 3pm to discuss the importance of capacity and field
building. If you want to learn more, please email me.
The AFATAC Evaluation results will be shared on August 17 some time
between 1pm and 5pm. If you want to learn more, please email me.
We currently do not have any funding to continue to provide AFATAC
Learning Circles to the community. The cost listed above - $37,000 -
is the cost to provide this service. We are open to innovative and
creative ways to fund this project again. If you have any ideas,
suggestions, or leads please get in contact with me via email or at
415 509 1882.
Youth Worker Collective at large is undergoing a massively exciting
transition. Yas Ahmed and I are no longer staff with the organization.
As such, we have both stepped back in to volunteer roles within Youth
Worker Collective. Our goal is to become a completely distributive and
collectively run body of youth workers. As we make this transition, we
will be reaching out and connecting with past participants/members/
youth workers to find out what excites, invigorates, and rejuvenates
YOU! It is our goal to continue to provide FREE products and services
to youth workers in the Bay Area. We have been around in various
iterations for over 13 years. We are not going away. We are just
hibernating/incubating for the time being. If you want to become
involved, please email me or call me at
415 509 1882.
As for my next move, I am will continue to develop innovative and
collaborative professional development/field-building offerings rooted
in artistic exploration. I am available to discuss ideas, brainstorm
opportunities, and make things happen in a collaborative and community
environment for youth workers, artists, youth organizations, arts
organizations, and others I have yet to consider. I am providing my
services FOR FREE to the community for the next THREE months. If you
would like to discuss how we can work together to make things happen,
please contact me via email or at
415 509 1882.
Peace,
Jason Wyman

Hey Everyone,
The big SFSI Training is coming up, which I teach and highly
recommend. Please share with your clients, staff, students, and
volunteers. Attached is a flier with the full description, as well as
a single page flier, if you need something to post. The info is also
available at
http://sfsi.org/wiki/Training .
Sex Educator Training Classes
San Francisco Sex Information offers a unique class on human sexuality
twice each year.
The mission of the SFSI training is to train people to provide
accurate, nonjudgmental sex information to the public. At the end of
training, a trainee should make significant progress in basic sex
information, communication and education skills, and personal insight.
San Francisco Sex Information's Sex Educator Training Is Now More
Accessible
San Francisco Sex Information offers unique classes on human sexuality
twice a year. SFSI's Sex Educator's Training is now available to you 3
different ways:
1. Professional Development & Volunteer Intensive Track. The
Traditional SFSI Training Experience. Take advantage of the
time-proven SFSI training of every other weekend for 2 months. You'll
experience more than 57 hours of instruction on human sexuality in
just 2 months, which is more than most medical students receive during
their professional education. You'll hear from individuals and panels
of speakers, as well as watch videos, slides, and films covering all
aspects of human sexuality. This is the most direct way to become a
SFSI volunteer, switchboard or other. 'We highly recommend this route
because of the experience most people have as they immerse themselves
into the SFSI brand of sex education and begin networking with their
classmates, training staff, and the larger SFSI community. Roughly 2/3
of our spaces are reserved for people who wish to complete the
training in one cycle.
2. Professional Development & Volunteer Extended Track, taken over
1 year. Full SFSI training in 2 training cycles. Do you want the
advantage of the continued training of volunteering on the SFSI
switchboard, but do not have the time to take the training all at
once? Now you can stretch the training over 2 training cycles by
completing 2-3 weekends this training cycle and coming back to finish
in the next training cycle. Weekend one must be taken during your
first training cycle.
3. Professional Development by the weekend. Have you always wanted
to take SFSI training but can't commit to 4 weekends? Are you
interested in augmenting your professional training with certain
topics, without duplicating your existing training? Now you can take
just one weekend at a time. We recommend this track to health care
professionals, mental health care providers, educators, and other in
the helping professions.
Course Content & Objectives
Basic Sex Information
One of the objectives of training is to impart information about human
sexuality. While it is not possible to cover every aspect of sexual
behavior in detail, our aim is to give each trainee at least some
information about as many areas of sexuality as possible. Full course
trainees should leave the training with at least a passing familiarity
with core sexuality subject areas. These include:
* sex, gender, and orientation
* sexual anatomy and physiology
* sexual function and dysfunction
* pregnancy/birth control/fertility
* STD symptoms, treatments, and prevention
* harm reduction
* safer sex
* masturbation and fantasy
* BDSM, fetishes, variations
* relationships
* oral, anal, and penis-vagina sex
Communication and Education Skills
A unique feature of the "SFSI experience" offered in the full SFSI
training is the emphasis on communication. Many of our graduates feel
that the communication skills they learn from this class have helped
them become more effective communicators in everyday life.
Trainees should be able to communicate information about human
sexuality and their own sexuality to others, whether in an educational
or private context. This includes the ability to:
* Listen effectively.
* Communicate about sex without becoming emotionally overloaded.
* Ask pertinent clarifying questions.
* Suspend judgments.
* Present information in a way that is clear, comprehensible, and
appropriate personal insight
Throughout the training, trainees are exposed to information, ideas,
lifestyles, practices, and opinions that may be unfamiliar or
challenging. Our goal is that trainees develop increased insight about
their own sexual desires, history, and attitudes. This includes:
* Being aware of judgments and assumptions.
* Being aware of how their own histories, families, contexts, and
cultures have informed their feelings and attitudes about sexuality.
* Being able to recognize emotional triggers that interfere with
their abilities to process information about sexuality.
The full class series is includes more than 57 hours of instruction on
human sexuality - more than most medical students receive during their

Resource of the month: Teen Issues
About Teen Issue:
“TeenIssues was formed to offer a unique reference point on what
teenagers want to know.
It's hard to be a teen. We knew this when we established TeenIssues
and recruited experts on all matters teen-related to contribute to the
site. It is our hope that TeenIssues can address all of the perils and
pitfalls that come with being a teen, and become the premier resource
offering teens interesting features, practical advice, and basic
answers to all of their own questions.”
