Postal employee accused of hiding, delaying 18,000 pieces of mail
PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a 28-year-old Fayette County mail carrier hid or delayed thousands of pieces of mail entrusted to him. A grand jury on Tuesday indicted Jeffrey Booker of New Salem on a charge of delay of mail by a postal employee.
Prosecutors accuse Booker of hiding, detaining or delaying nearly 18,400 pieces of standard mail, 37 pieces of first-class or certified first-class mail and five parcels. Booker declined comment Tuesday afternoon and said he would call The Associated Press later, but had not as of 11:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Boy, 14, struck by mail truck in Pike Creek dies
PIKE CREEK, Delaware (AP) New Castle County Police say a 14-year-old Drummond Ridge boy has died, one day after he was hit by a mail truck. Police say truck hit Ju Chow around 4:40 p.m. Monday as he crossed Rankin Road near White Clay Crescent in Pike Creek. Paramedics found the boy with massive head injuries. He was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon.
Police and the U.S. Postal Service are investigating the incident. Witnesses told police that Chow was talking to some girls on the side of the road and he walked away into the path of the truck. The 21-year-old Brookside man who was driving the truck hasn't been charged. Postal officials say he won't be allowed to drive for work until the investigation is resolved.

Probe opened into bag of stolen mail
SALISBURY, MARYLAND -- The U.S. Postal Service and the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office are conducting a joint investigation into recent mail thefts. On Sunday, a trash bag containing discarded mail was found near Pemberton Drive and turned over to the Salisbury Police Department.
The Sheriff's Office was informed about the mail after it was discovered that several of the addresses found on the envelopes were in areas outside of the city limits. "This is one of the biggest cases of stolen mail we've dealt with," said Chief Deputy Gary Baker of the Sheriff's Office.
More than 270 pieces of mail were found over a three- to five-mile stretch of road, including a trash bag filled with the bulk of the missing parcels. Baker said it is believed whoever committed the thefts was possibly targeting Christmas cards containing money and gift cards.
"The other items like magazines and bills were left untouched and thrown away," he said.
Freda Sauter, a spokeswoman for the Postal Service's Baltimore office said that as of Monday the mail was given to Salisbury Postmaster Christine Quinn to be redelivered. This was the first time stolen mail was located like this, Sauter said. The Sheriff's Office said it is still following leads and have asked residents to provide any information about suspicious vehicles in the area. Sauter said it is essential to contact postal authorities immediately if residents notice anything strange regarding their mail.
"It's important that customers quickly report any lost or stolen mail," she said. "Tampering with mail is a federal offense punishable by jail time." Anyone with information about the mail thefts is asked to call the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office at
410-548-4891, the U.S. Postal Service's Theft hot line at 1-800-THEFT-USPS or a postal inspector at
1-877-876-2455.

Letter carrier provides free lawn mowing
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Dec. 11 (UPI) -- A letter carrier in St. Petersburg, Fla., spends much of his off-hours on his route, mowing lawns for elderly and disabled residents. "It's just my little way of making a difference," Eric Wills told the Tampa (Fla.) Tribune.
Wills has been on the same route for about six years, delivering mail to almost 500 people. Once he had been doing it for a while he realized that some of his customers got no other visitors. He began mowing lawns about two years ago. After weeks of grousing to himself about one elderly man whose yard had become a jungle-like thicket of overgrown gras s and vines, he decided that it was his job to do something about it, so he returned after work with his lawn mower.
Wills now takes care of about 15 yards on his route and has a homemade trailer with a sign that says "Lawns for the Lord." He does other chores as well and even brought his 7-year-old daughter to play the piano and visit with an elderly shut-in. Wills recently got a note from the girlfriend of the man whose overgrown lawn started his mission -- "Thank you for your help cutting the grass. Jack died last night and I will be moving out. Again, thank you very much."
