Postal vehicle rolls; worker, mail OK
JEFFERSON COUNTY , Colorado– A postal vehicle was involved in a rollover accident on Wednesday, but the worker and the mail appear to be OK.

The crash occurred on South Elk Creek Road around 4:15 p.m.

The postal worker suffered minor injuries, but they do not appear to be life threatening.

The post office dispatched a postal inspector to the scene and officials were able to recover all the mail. It was not damaged in the crash and was taken back to the post office to be redistributed.

Post Office surcharge could slash Netflix profit
By Bloomberg News  |  December 6, 2007
Netflix Inc., the largest US mail-order movie-rental service, may suufer a cut in profit if the US Postal Service starts charging extra to manually sort the envelopes that carry its DVDs, a Citigroup Inc. analyst said. An audit prepared by the Postal Service's Inspector General last month recommended charging one unidentified company 17 cents per envelope for labor costs. Citigroup analyst Tony Wible, who said in a note to investors Tuesday that the company is Netflix, estimated the charge might reduce profit per subscriber to 35 cents from $1.05.
Mailers from Blockbuster Inc., the world's largest video-rental chain, aren't handled the same way, Wible said. He advises investors to buy Blockbuster shares. A Blockbuster spokesman didn't respond to a phone message seeking comment. Netflix saves the postal service $100 million annually because it pays the first-class postage rate both ways even though the company picks up returned mail at the post office, Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey said. Netflix ships about 1.6 million DVDs a day.
"It's highly unlikely we would be assessed any surcharges, because we would change the mailer if required," Swasey said. Netflix shares rose 18 cents to $23.93 in Nasdaq Stock Market trading.
The Inspector General contends that 70 percent of Netflix's envelopes are handled manually because a "floppy leading edge" on the red mailers tends to jam equipment during automated processing, the report said. The manual processing cost $41.9 million during the past two years and will cost $61.5 million over the next two years. http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2007/12/06/post_office_surcharge_could_slash_netflix_profit?mode=PF
Frank Sinatra Stamp Scheduled For Spring
(CBS) Frank Sinatra, one of the most notable entertainers of the 20th century, will be commemorated on a postage stamp next spring, Postmaster General John Potter announced Wednesday.

"We've had a lot of requests for a Frank Sinatra stamp, certainly one of the great American icons, and to be able to feature him in our stamp program is a big thrill for all of us," Dave Failor, executive director of Stamp Services, told CBS News reporter Lloyd de Vries. Sinatra died May 14, 1998.

"On behalf of our family, we are honored that the United States Postal Service has recognized our Dad's achievements with a stamp," said Tina Sinatra, in a statement, on behalf of her siblings, Nancy and Frank Sinatra, Jr. "Of all the awards he has received, this one would have been very special to him."

The design of the stamp will be released next Wednesday when a 10-foot image of the stamp is unveiled in Beverly Hills, Calif. Sinatra's three children will attend. The stamp design is a vertical format, and shows Sinatra in the mid-1950s.

"It's a wonderful portrait by an artist who we've used before, Kazuhiko Sano, and I think people will be very happy with Ol' Blue Eyes," Failor said.

Many stamp collectors had been surprised when the 2008 stamp program was first announced in August, and Sinatra wasn't in it, says de Vries. Bette Davis will be the entry in the Legends of Hollywood series; the Sinatra stamp is not part of any series.

Most of the remaining designs for 2008 stamps will be released between Christmas and New Year's Day. The designs for Lunar New Year, Alzheimer's Awareness, Charles W. Chesnutt (Black Heritage Series), and American Journalists (including CBS News' Eric Sevareid and George Polk), have already been made public.

A native of Japan, Sano studied painting in Tokyo before moving to San Francisco in 1974 to study at the Academy of Art College. He designed 12 of the 15 stamps in the Celebrate the Century series in 1999. When the stamp will be issued will depend largely on whether the Postal Service raises rates in the spring.

"We want to time it so it would be at the new rate, as not to issue it at the old rate and only be able to have a very short shelf life of say a month or two," Failor said. The release is likely sometime in May or June. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/12/05/entertainment/printable3579153.shtml
Indictment: Postmaster wanted murder-for-hire

David Willis
Worried about his retirement income because of his divorce, Cornelius Postmaster David Willis considered poisoning his ex-wife with anti-freeze and talked of hiring someone to kill her, court documents state. A federal grand jury on Monday indicted Willis, 56, of Stanley, on two federal charges after the FBI began recording his conversations months ago.

The Cornelius postmaster since 2005, Willis is off duty without pay until the case finishes, said U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman Enola Rice. He is in the Mecklenburg County Jail until a detention hearing set for 10:15 a.m. Thursday. According to court documents, the FBI began investigating Willis after receiving information from a another Postal Service employee after Willis asked him to participate in the killing of Willis’ ex-wife, a Charlotte postal carrier. Documents state that Willis was worried about his ex-wife getting half of his monthly retirement income. It’s not known when they were divorced.

He’s charged with solicitation to commit a crime of violence and using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire. If convicted, Willis faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for the solicitation charge and 10 years for the use of facilities charge. Both also carry a $250,000 fine.

Another ex-wife, Betty Willis of Princeton, W.Va., said the charges sound nothing like something Willis would do. “David wouldn’t hurt a fly,” she said. “He doesn’t have it in him to hire somebody to kill another person.” Betty Willis said he was married and divorced three times, with three adult children. Workers at the Cornelius post office declined to comment.

In conversations taped by the Postal Service employee, Willis considered different ways of killing his ex-wife, according to documents.

“I (have) already decided it’s either her or me, and I’ll pop a cap of my own before I live like this,” court documents state Willis said during a conversation with the Postal Service employee. Later conversations included Willis talking about spiking with anti-freeze lemonade commonly left out for his ex-wife by someone on her postal route.

“Three days later, it doesn’t matter where I’m at,” he said, according to documents. “She’s gonna have stomach pains and get a little funny. They take her to the hospital, she croaks, and it hits you – boom! –kidney failure.”

Willis also considered paying someone anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 to kill his ex-wife, according to documents.

Cornelius resident Jan Scere described Willis as a quiet man who didn’t talk much to customers at the post office. Willis has worked in various positions for the Postal Service since 1973, as well as working as a hypnotist to help people lose weight and quit smoking.

Dallas ex-postal worker admits he stole mail
© 2007 The Associated Press
DALLAS, Texas — A 35-year-old now-former postal worker in the Dallas area who stole mail will be sentenced Feb. 27.
Salvador Gonzalez of Dallas faces up to five years in prison. Prosecutors say Gonzalez pleaded guilty Tuesday to theft of mail matter by an officer or employee.
An October 2006 traffic stop for speeding, when Gonzalez was driving his own pickup and on his way to work, led to the discovery of about 2,000 pieces of delayed and undelivered mail.
Authorities found dozens of blank checks, more than 50 credit cards and old Christmas cards. None belonged to Gonzalez.
Prosecutors say Gonzalez admitted stealing at least $500 from the greeting cards.
Gonzalez also could be fined $250,000 and required to make restitution.
