SEATTLE, WA-- As the Ladies First Collective Project wraps up its 10th season in the Seattle area, we plan on celebrating Saturday, July 2, 2012 at Washington Hall. Until then, we have one more fantastic showcase at the NW Folklife Festival on May 26, 2012. Since the closing of Communities Against Rape and Abuse (CARA) and the moving of Hidmo to Washington Hall, we have shifted and changed. With hard work, we acquired a grant from 4culture and were able to pay artists stipends and more. We have been busy producing monthly shows at Life Enrichment Books, supporting two artists releasing their chapbooks, sponsoring community events, collaborating across genres, having our first international internet broadcast show, and organizing the Women Who Rock Conference, Film Festival, and Showcase. As always, we have supported known and unknown artists that inspire us to create and envision the possibilities of the power of people. We look forward to our second showcase at the Northwest Folklife Festival and invite you to continue the celebration of ten years on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Vera Project Stage during our Northwest Folklife Festival Showcase where seasoned and new artists will continue to inspire and enhance your understanding of community, music, genres, creation, liberation, and magic.
The mission of Ladies First is to offer a safe, sacred place for women/female identifying (straight, queer, trans, gender non-confirming, and two-spirit) to share their poetry, music and art. Born from the anti-rape and social justices philosophies of CARA (Communities Against Rape and Abuse), Ladies First has encouraged building contexts, on and off stage, to address issues such as patriarchal oppression, internalized sexism, state violence, domestic violence and sexual violence. In a supportive, community environment Ladies First has created a platform which empowers marginalized voices and individual struggles--a space to utilize artistic expression in affirming ourselves, our values, our identities, and to positively change the way we view our bodies and our safety. The Ladies First showcase events are known for the welcoming, encouraging, joy having experience; inviting all into this safe space, regardless of gender, to celebrate the voices on stage.
