No, they're not! It probably looked like they were in Hangzhou when I put at the bottom Hangzhou, China. Monica and the boys are all in New Zealand and I will be joining them there on 13 January for a few weeks. Monica will be returning to Hangzhou at the end of February. Philip and Peter continue with their university studies. Philip needs to repeat a few units next semester and then, hopefully, he will graduate. He's thinking of doing a one year teaching diploma after he finishes his BA. Peter still has another year to go.

Today, for the first time in history we were allowed to invite our Chinese friends to HICF. The auditorium was packed with 300+. There were 30 first time decisions for Christ and a young woman was delivered from demons. She, her parents and mother-in-law all became Christians today. Our neighbour's daughter made a decision for Christ so now the whole family are Christians.

I'm exhausted so going to bed. God bless and Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. How was the HICF Christmas Party this year? Would love to see some pictures.
We have been back to New Jersey for several months now. Everything is improving, including our health. Our church is very happy to see us back and Teddy back in the choir. But someday we would love to come back to Hangzhou to see you!

Teddy and Denise

Pastor Julian,

Great news! I wonder if Chinese were allowed because the Sunday was Christmas Day or it is a general policy change, which will be tremendous!

May God keep you and Monica fit and energetic! You deserve a good vacation!

Hello,

I really enjoy all the updates from y'all.  It is such a blessing that the Chinese people were finally allowed to the service.

Also, CK- I am in the Raleigh, NC area.  Small world...

Thanks,

Dear Pastor Julian,

Every time I try to "reply" to your email, apparently sent from your personal address, I end up with sending to the whole group! Of course I don't really mind sharing with the HICF folks.

I recently showed these and many other photos of Chinese Christian churches and activities at a Sunday school "inter-generational" class at our church, Kingston Presbyterian Church. I told them briefly about the Three-self churches, the house churches, the Little Sheep in Hangzhou, the Bible Study Group at David's and the HICF, and about you, a "retired" English pastor from Australia. What a blessing! KPC is a historical church dating back to the 1700s, currently with a quite diversified membership. An sister from Africa came to tell me afterwards that she was baptized in a creek as well and she likes the tradition, but in our church there is no baptism by emersion any more. Compared churches in China, the official or the "underground", American "main stream" churches are really in decline, and oftentime locked up or confused by debates on issues such as gay marriages. The General Assembly of Presbyterian Church USA, to which the Kingston church is affiliated, had already approved the ordaining of gay clergymen and almost passed something changing the definition of marriage. I really don't know how far they will go and how long before PCUSA is going to break up. At the same time, several local Chinese Christian churches are booming. So sometimes I think about going back to a Chinese church. On the other hand, our church (KPC) is in a transition after the recent retirement of our last pastor who had served more than 36 years. We are praying for God's guidance for this historical church and for our future. We wish we could have an as fulfilled retirement life as yours.

The summer has gone and October should be the most comfortable time in Hangzhou. I miss looking over the lake from your apartment. Enjoy it!

My best to Monica!

In Christ,

Teddy

Dear Pastor Julian/Teddy Zhou,

I am glad to be back in contact with brothers and sister at HICF! My family and I used to visit HICF, and I also used to speak regulary there during the years 2004-2008. Since then we have been pretty well settled in Shaoxing, and I haven't had many opportunities to visit Hangzhou.

Welcome to Shaoxing! We are only about 1 or 1 1/2 hours from Hangzhou by bus or train. There are 10,000 foreigners living in Shaoxing, many of them from South Asia, Korea and Japan who live and work in Keqiao, which is an international textile trading center. There are also English and other foreign language teachers and Finnish nurse trainees who live in the downtown Shaoxing area.

The last few months, two scholars from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou came to visit me in Shaoxing. I will come to Hangzhou to deliver two papers on Protestant missionaries in China, one on Nov. 15 at the Zijinggang Campus and one at another conference on Nov. 17 probably at the Xixi Campus of Zhejiang University. Is HICF interested in my presenting a free lecture on the history of Christianity in China and international exchanges with university scholars in Mailand China? Can you schedule it the evening of Nov. 15, and also give me free accommodation in Hangzhou that night? If so, I will be glad to share with you.

Also, a scholar from New Zealand, who also researches the history of Christianity in China, will be visiting me in Shaoxing the nights of Nov. 12 and 13 before attending the first Nov. 14-17 conference in Hangzhou. If any HICF members are interested in meeting him either in Shaoxing or Zhejiang, please do let me know.
