This is great, Michael.  Thank you!  It is recommended viewing, especially if you have never heard this historical argument before (ie, that the Chinese believed in the Most High God - Shang Di - prior to Buddhism, Confucianism and Daosim)!  It may just blow your mind!

Dear Greg and Michael,

Thanks for your message! I am researching Walter Henry Medhurst, who was the first Protestant missionary to promote the term Shang Di for God. I would be interested in meeting you sometime.

I am now in Berlin, Germany and will be here until 2 April, when I plan to visit Goettingen (2-4 April), Halle (4-6 April), Leipzig (6-8 April) and Berlin again (8-12 April) and return to Shaoxing 13 April. I welcome any contacts in these cities, also you are welcome to visit Shaoxing after 13 April!

There are various English-speaking Christians and groups in Shaoxing, who knows maybe we'll be able to form our own Shaoxing Christian Fellowship someday!

Hello all,

Thanks for the email.  These videos are also available on YouTube for those who can access it.  Also, the following book covers much of the same material:  Finding God in Ancient China by The use of Shang Di for God is a fascinating Chan Kei Thong. In the USA this is the information:
  • Publisher: Zondervan (August 25, 2009)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0310292387
  • ISBN-13: 978-0310292388
It has also been published with this name: Faith of Our Fathers.

  • Publisher: China Publishing Group Orient (2005)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 7801865065
  • ISBN-13: 978-7801865069
(Frankly, this version is by far the better of the two. Zondervan settled for black and white images.)

In addition, a Chinese version is available:

  • Publisher: China Publishing Group Orient (2005)
  • Language: Mandarin Chinese
  • ISBN-10: 7801864298
  • ISBN-13: 978-7801864291
I don't know if it's still available in China.

The whole question of using Shang Di instead of (or in addition to) Shen is fascinating to me. Since my return from China a year and a half ago I have worked for a Chinese Church in Chicago, teaching English to immigrants. Their preferred Bible are the Shen editions, though they don't seem to mind the Shangdi versions. I think it's simply what they're used to. In the bilingual Bible study I lead, we use  the Shangdi version - even though our study material uses Shen. No one seems to have a problem with it. One of the participants has a grandfather as a teacher in a TSPM church and he has emailed her asking what version the immigrants use. It seems to becoming a topic of discussion among some of Chinese believers.

Anyway, thank you for the emails.

In Christ,
