Blog:  Jewels in the Jungle (http://jewelsnthejungle.blogspot.com/)
Location: Bremen, Germany (I'm also an American abroad.  The last American POW in Germany)

I am very interested in how people of all ages are using information technology to communicate and collaborate with one another over great distances.  My career has ranged from engineering management in large defense electronics companies (U.S., Europe) to fostering and supporting IT engineering startups and other small businesses.  At present my focus is on new media and online journalism and the technologies and people who are "busting it out of the box" in the 21st Century.

My interest in the Hisbiscus Project is to see if a genuine, open, and honest dialogue about the growing relationship between Africa (incl. government leaders, African citizens and the diaspora) and the government officials and citizens of the People's Republic of China can be created, sustained over time, and be productive for all concerned.

I won't be very active in discussions at the beginning due to (severe) time constraints but hope to contribute something useful to the group over time. I am without a doubt the oldest member of our new group, so be patient with "the old man" and his somewhat skeptical and conservative views on new challenges facing you young(er) people.

Hi all - so excited to see everyone here - it's all finally happening.

I'm mostly a journalist and editor but just recently an advocate of better polices on africa on behalf of the Open Society Institute's office in Washington, DC.

I do increasing amounts of work on the China/Africa  relationship ( i just wrote a piece for Foreign Policy in Focus, at http://www.fpif.org/fpiftxt/4068) and am increasingly convinced that the most important thing to do is expand 'non-governmental' communication between the two.

i know of a couple of conferences that hope to bring together people from civil society groups and NGOs in Africa and China later this year. One really useful thing we could do on the group pages is maintain a shared calendar where we can pool information about dates - events to blog about, opportunities for meet-ups and travel grants etc.

Hi Akwe,

This is a great post.  Can I translate it into Chinese and submit the translation to Chinese translation communities?
