does the version of FLAc encoder affect capability of gapless playback in a DLNA network?

Hello
I have a large collection of .flac music files ripped from CDs started in 2006 when I had a squeezebox and LMS.
Recently I have switched to a Denon  DNP-730AE DLNA player and I am using HiFi Cast to stream music in it from a MinimServer install into a QNap NAS.

I noticed I have difficulties in having the "old" files, created in 2008 with FLAC compressor 1.2.1 to play with automatic track advancement and gapless.
They very often do not. The player stops after the first song.
the only way is to use the "force advance track" option, but you loose gapless and sometimes it makes very harsh transitions even between songs who have the canonical 2 seconds interval.

I made sure to verify tagging, but the albums are properly tagged and there are no strange characters in file names.

If I re-encode the old files to newer FLAC files using a more recent FLAC compressor such as 1,3.2, then the new files play gapless and with automatic track advancement !!!!
Tagging is precisely the same as old files.

Anybody knowledgeable enough to explain to me why this is happening?

Thanks a lot in advance.

I wouldn't have thought it would make any difference provided that the early version created valid FLAC files.
You can test the validity of the files using the flac utility. The -t command line option should do the trick.

Hi Hi-Fi Cast developer(s),

I too have a Denon renderer, in the form of an AVR-X2300W, With Hi-Fi Cast I could happily stream gapless to a Chromecast Audio, but with my AVR I thought to be able to do the same, as it supports gapless, without the need of the CCA in between. However that doesn't work at all, regardless of the settings in Hi-Fi Cast (tried all variations). Unfortunately I found a reply from Denon somewhere that it only supports gapless playback when using it's own mediaplayer, which is not the best thing to use. Moreover it sorts the songs alphabetically, instead of by track, so gapless doesn't bring any joy there anyway. That seems to be dependent on the media server, so a different topic.

But my question actually is: Why would gapless playback to the Chromecast Audio be any different than to any other DLNA/UPnP renderer? So why would the one work, the other not?

Hi,
It's because the Chromecast Audio isn't actually a DLNA/UPnP renderer - it uses a completely different protocol. So for now at least, gapless will only work with UPnP/DLNA renderers that support it natively.
