Just installed the app - streaming FLAC files from my Emby server to Chromecast Audio devices at home. Working great! What about connecting to my Emby server when I'm away from home? Strangely, I don't see anything for that. Emby app works great outside of my WiFi network. Will Hi-Fi Cast? Or is this not one of its features?

Sorry but that feature is not available in the Hi-Fi Cast app.

I hope you become interested in adding it. Your app would become a full-featured music player. 😀

Is it right to assume this won't ever work through an OpenVPN tunnel? I would love to stream my library to my phone while away from home!

Not necessarily, but:
  • the app must have already discovered the media server on your home network (so that it knows the IP address)
  • the server must not have been assigned a different IP address since the app discovered it
  • the 'Keep remote devices online' setting must be enabled (via Settings > UPnP/DLNA)
  • If you are connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet then it might just work
  • Otherwise you'll also need to have the 'Use VPN interface' setting enabled.
I haven't actually tried it - so it may or may not work. Please let us know how you get on :)

I've tested Hi-Fi Cast over VPN with OpenVPN and it works perfectly on fast networks (low latency). On VPN over mobile networks there is a problem with finding the server. Mostly it is shown as offline allthough the VPN connection works. If there are songs from the dlna server in the playlist, these songs are playing over VPN with no problem. I think, there is a problem with timeouts searching the dlna server.

Thanks for your input. I only tested openvpn over cellular and get the "not connected to local network" message. Will try openvpn over external wifi as soon as I have time and a semi public wifi :)

When using a VPN over cellular you need to have the 'Use VPN interface' setting enabled in UPnP/DLNA settings.

Thanks for your reply. Of course I used VPN for both cellular and WIFI Network (outside my home WIFI). VPN works allways, I've tested that with SMB access to my home server. When there is an existing play list with songs from my UPNP server, I can play this songs also when I connect with VPN over cellular, but in the list of media servers my UPNP server is shown as offline. I think there is a timeout issue.

Problem still exists. Must be some sort of bug as songs already in the playlist/queue play fine but the media server view says "not connected to local network"

Hi,
In Settings, try disabling the 'Network Check' option.

Has anyone tried remote access over PPTP VPN? I am not having any luck.

Never mind. Got it to work. So it works with the built-in Android PPTP as well.

Yes, this helped me too. So the "network check" should be implemented in a different way!?
