Good morning,
I recently change my mobile (Huawei p20 Pro) and have this problem. I can't play flac files (from DLNA, my personal cloud) using the mobile itself. No problem playing flac files to Chromecast Audio or mp3 files to both (Chromecast and Huawei)
The app MediaMonkey is failing too (So I think it's something related with the phone)
Thanks in advance

I can't play FLAC files on my local device either with Hi-Fi Cast. I have a Moto Z Play. I can play FLAC files with VLC so the device is certainly capable of it.

I'd love to find a solution.

I have the same problem with Huawei Honor View 10.It might be Android Oreo compatibility issue of Hi-Fi cast?
It works perfectly on Android 5,6 and 7, I have tested all.

OK. That's strange. The app uses the FLAC encoder that is part of the Android installation on the phone (the actual encoder implementation can vary by device model).
Could you try the following:
  • While playing one of the troublesome FLACs, go to the Now Playing screen
  • Tap the song title to open the Song Details screen
  • Tap PLAYBACK DIAGNOSTICS (you might need to scroll down) to open the Playback Diagnostics screen
  • Run the diagnostics. Do you see any error message?
Thanks.

Thanks for your answer and for the comments of you all.
This is even stranger. The "playback diagnostics" are ok (All marks green)
I only found an app that play correctly FLAC files on both devices (Chromecast and Huawei mobile P20 Pro -Oreo 8.1-) ==> Foobar2000. (I tested about 6/7 apps)
In any case I'd prefer to use Hi-Fi Cast which is -despite these little problems- an awesome app and my preferred one.
BTW, speaking of "playback diagnostics" I had an error with about half a dozen of FLAC files, probably related with the tag version of the FLAC encoder... In this last case these files are correctly played on the phone -my previous one, a Sony Xperia with Android 5- and refused by Chromecast -just the opposite of initially exposed in this thread-
Hi-Fi cast -under Huawei Oreo 8.1- don't play these FLAC files on both: neither mobile itself -because it is a FLAC file- nor Chromecast, probably due to the tagging issue I just mentioned. I'd need to take more tests.
Thanks in advance for your kindness,
JF

Hi,

Some more info...I managed to test Hi-Fi Cast on LG V30 with Android Oreo 8.0 and it works perfectly, none of the above reported issues. So it seems that the problem is rather hardware releted than Android version related.Newer Huawei devices seem to have the issues.Hope it helps.

Thanks for the extra info Laszlo. I've recently had other reports of FLACs not playing on Huawei devices that have been updated to Android Oreo. I guess the only solution would be for Hi-Fi Cast to do it's own decoding of the FLAC files. I'm not sure at this stage if/when I'll be able to include this in the app.

The latest version of the app (v1.094) has an option to use an alternate FLAC decoder. This might solve the issue you are having playing FLAC files.
  • Go to the 'Playback Devices' screen and tap the settings icon for 'This Device'.
  • Tap 'Audio Decoding Method' and select 'Alternative'
  • Try playing a FLAC file!
