Hello Sweet 16 Teams,
I hope your preparations for the Sweet 16 are going smoothly. We’re looking forward to seeing you at 8:00 AM tomorrow morning in Paccar 291. Important information and reminders are below. Please read.
· Bring 9 copies of your slides to the Sweet 16 for the judges.
· If you have a Mac, be sure to bring an adapter. The projectors here are set up for PCs. We’re not providing you with a computer. You need to bring your own. We will, however, have a wireless presenter for you that will allow you to advance your slides using a remote. It plugs into your computer via a USB drive.
· Be sure to show up on time. Stop by the Deloitte Commons (glassed in room on the 2nd floor of Paccar by the fireplace) to get your nametag and breakfast just before 8:00 AM. All nametags will be grouped together by team. If you pick up your teams’ nametags, be sure to let them know.
· After you get your nametags, go to Paccar 291. All Sweet 16 judges and teams will convene at 8:00 AM (in Paccar 291) to go over the rules and schedule for the day. This is also when we’ll reveal the presentation schedule for the morning.
· Be sure to have water with you for your presentation. The cups and water in the room are primarily for the judges.
· Sweet 16 presentations will be in Paccar 456 and 556 and BAEEC Douglas Forum and Seminar Room (both rooms are on the 4th floor of BAEEC).
· We’ll announce the Final Round teams at 12:00 PM in the Deloitte Commons. There will also be lunch available there for the Sweet 16 teams and judges. We also have the Jiambalvo Hearth reserved for the lunch, which is on other side of the fireplace from Deloitte Commons. The Sweet 16 judges will stay for lunch and provide you with feedback. If you see a judge during the lunch you want to talk to, go up to them and ask them for feedback. Ask them, “What did you think of our presentation? How can we make it better?” This will be a crowded and somewhat chaotic time so make the best of it. Your job is to eat lunch and connect with one or two of the judges from the Sweet 16.
· The Final Round will be held in Anthony’s Forum in Business Hall (Foster’s newest building) starting at 1:00 PM. Since Business Hall is technically still closed, you have to enter through the sky bridge on the 3rd floor of Paccar Hall. This is the only way you’ll be able to enter Business Hall. We’ll also be broadcasting a live feed from the Final Round at http://foster.washington.edu/bpclive so you can watch the presentations in real time.
· All Final Round teams will give a 1-minute quick pitch at the Dinner and Awards Ceremony. You will need to prepare one PowerPoint slide for this. The ppt slide will be collected during the Final Round on a jump drive. Note: this should be a static slide–no moving parts, etc.
· Regardless of what happens at the Sweet 16, you need to come to the Dinner and Awards Ceremony at Bell Harbor. You’re all in the running for the Best Idea Prizes so please show up to the dinner. It’s also a great opportunity to network with the judges. All judges and sponsors are invited to attend the dinner.
· Be sure to Tweet about the event and use the hashtag #uwbpc12.
Below is the information I sent you last week about the Sweet 16. Be sure to read it. You’re responsible for knowing that information. Let me if you have any questions. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Good luck!
Best regards,
Sarah
Sweet 16 and Final Round Details
SWEET 16
On Thursday, May 24, your entire team needs to be in Paccar 291 by 8:00 am. Beginning at 8:00, we will provide instructions for the day and announce the team presentation times and the judge panels.
The first teams start presenting at 8:30, so be prepared–you have a 1-in-4 chance of going first. During the Sweet 16, each panel of seven judges will see four teams and select one or two teams from that group to advance to the Final Round. Teams will be allowed 30 minutes to present and field questions. Your presentation SHOULD NOT last more than 15 min. Only STUDENT team members can PRESENT, but anyone can answer judges’ questions, depending on their area of expertise. Room monitors have final say on any questions and will ensure compliance with these two rules. They will end the session promptly to ensure that the next team has sufficient time to set up prior to their 30 minutes. Presentations are open only to the presenting team, judges, and organizing staff.
We will provide a projector and screen for your presentation–both will be in your room. Laptops will NOT be provided. Therefore, bring your own laptop. You also must ensure that your laptop is compatible with the projector. If you have a Mac, you need to bring an adapter. Wifi is available in Paccar, BAEEC, and Business Hall.
Judging Criteria. Judges will be asked to consider each team on these four criteria:
1. Team dynamics/quality of the team/ability to execute on the plan (student-driven teams a plus)
2. Company’s product/service addresses the target market’s needs (opportunity size is a plus, but not primary)
3. Viability of the business model/well-articulated and reasonable (IP position clear)
4. Quality of the presentation/materials and data/team’s ability to answer tough questions
FINAL ROUND
Lunch will be provided in the Deloitte Undergrad Commons (Paccar Hall 2nd floor) from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. At approximately 12:00, we will announce the teams advancing to the Final Round in the Deloitte Commons. The lead person from these advancing teams will draw their presentation order out of a hat. The first team will start presenting at approximately 1:00. The actual presentation schedule is subject to change depending on how many teams are in the Final Round. If there are 4-5 teams in the Final Round, each team will have 30 min. (15 min. to present and 15 min. for Q&A). If there are more than 5 teams in the Final Round, each team will have 20 min. (10 min. to present and 10 min. for Q&A). Be prepared for both! An exact Final Round schedule will be available after the announcement of the advancing teams.
The finalist teams will publicly present their business plans and field questions from the judging panel. You will be presenting in Anthony’s Forum in Business Hall (the new Foster building) and the judges will be seated in the front row. Business Hall is the new building just east of Paccar Hall, and Anthony’s Forum is on the 3rd floor of the building. Enter Business Hall from sky bridge on the 3rd floor of Paccar Hall.
Just as in the Sweet 16 Round, only STUDENT team members can PRESENT, but anyone can answer judges’ questions, depending on their area of expertise. And the presentation time–30 minutes (or 20 min. if more than 5 teams are in the Final Round)–will be STRICTLY ENFORCED.
Judging Criteria. Same as above.
The team that places highest will receive the $25,000 Grand Prize, and will be announced that evening at the Dinner and Awards Ceremony. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place winners will receive $10,000, $5,000 and $5,000, respectively. If there are five teams in the Final Round, three $5,000 finalist prizes will be awarded. All Final Round teams will give a 1-minute quick pitch at the Dinner and Awards Ceremony. You will need to prepare one PowerPoint slide for this. The ppt slide will be collected during the Final Round on a jump drive. Note: this should be a static slide–no moving parts, etc.
Here’s the schedule of events for the remainder of the Business Plan Competition:
